The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Mid-Level International Workspace Coordinator (L2)
2-3 years at L2Skills to master
- Mastering independent project execution, taking ownership of routine processes, identifying issues and proposing solutions, and starting to informally guide new joiners. You'd need to show you can handle more complexity and responsibility.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managed 3-5 small to medium-sized office projects (e.g., office refreshes, inter-floor moves) from start to finish.
- Consistently met SLAs for vendor management and workplace requests.
- Proactively identified and resolved operational inefficiencies within your scope.
- Received strong positive feedback from internal stakeholders and your manager on your reliability and initiative.
- 2
Facilities Manager (Single Country/Large Site)
3-5 years in a similar roleSkills to master
- Adapting your deep, single-site facilities management knowledge to a multi-country, multi-cultural context. This means learning international compliance, vendor management across borders, and navigating different real estate markets.
You're ready to move on when
- Managed a significant facilities budget (e.g., £500K+ annual OpEx) for a large single site or country.
- Successfully overseen major maintenance projects or minor build-outs.
- Demonstrated strong vendor management and negotiation skills.
- Proven ability to manage health and safety compliance for a complex environment.
- 3
Project Coordinator (Construction/Real Estate)
4-6 years in project coordinationSkills to master
- Developing a deeper understanding of ongoing workplace operations beyond project delivery, including space utilisation, lease administration, and the day-to-day employee experience. You'd be moving from 'building' to 'running' the space.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully delivered multiple construction or real estate projects on time and within budget.
- Strong experience with project planning, scheduling, and risk management.
- Excellent communication and coordination skills with contractors and stakeholders.
- A keen interest in the operational side of real estate, not just the project phase.
