The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From 3PL Operations Management
5-7 yearsSkills to master
- If you've managed operations *for* a 3PL, you'll need to learn how to manage them *as a client*. This means shifting your mindset from execution to strategic oversight, contract management, and performance governance.
You're ready to move on when
- You've managed a significant operational team or site for a 3PL.
- You've been involved in client-facing discussions about service levels and performance.
- You understand the commercial pressures and operational realities of a 3PL from the inside.
- 2
From Logistics Analyst / Coordinator
5-8 yearsSkills to master
- You'll need to move beyond just reporting data to interpreting it, driving action, and leading relationships. This means developing stronger negotiation, stakeholder management, and informal leadership skills.
You're ready to move on when
- You've consistently identified performance issues and proposed solutions based on data.
- You've taken initiative to improve processes or resolve complex operational problems.
- You've informally mentored junior colleagues or taken on project leadership roles.
- 3
From Procurement / Sourcing Specialist (Logistics focus)
6-8 yearsSkills to master
- While you'll be good at sourcing, you'll need to deepen your post-contract relationship management, performance monitoring, and operational problem-solving skills. It's less about the deal, more about the delivery.
You're ready to move on when
- You've managed the full RFx process for logistics services.
- You've negotiated logistics contracts and understand their key clauses.
- You're keen to move beyond just the transaction to ongoing partnership management.
