The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Lead Global Operations Manager (Internal Promotion)
3-5 years as a Lead Global Operations Manager (L4)Skills to master
- At L4, you'd have mastered designing and implementing new, complex processes, managed large-scale projects, and started to influence strategic direction. To move to L5, you'd need to demonstrate consistent success in leading significant initiatives, a clear ability to mentor and develop others, and a nascent understanding of P&L management.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 2-3 major cross-functional operational projects from start to finish, delivering measurable impact.
- Consistently mentored 2+ junior team members, with at least one successfully progressing to a more senior role.
- Proactively identified and championed a significant process improvement that resulted in tangible cost savings or efficiency gains.
- Demonstrated strong leadership in ambiguous situations, taking ownership and driving solutions without constant oversight.
- 2
Senior Operations Manager (External Hire)
Coming from a similar role in a larger, more complex organisation (e.g., Head of Logistics for a specific region, Senior Manager of Supply Chain Planning)Skills to master
- You'd already bring extensive experience in managing global or regional operational functions, leading teams, and owning significant budgets. The focus would be on adapting your expertise to our specific industry, culture, and tech stack, and quickly building credibility with our internal stakeholders.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven track record of managing a team of 5+ operations professionals for several years.
- Demonstrable experience in managing an operational budget of at least £1M and showing clear P&L impact.
- Successfully led significant operational transformation projects in previous roles.
- Strong references highlighting your leadership, strategic thinking, and ability to deliver results in a complex environment.
