First Pass Yield (FPY) on Inspected Lots
This is about how many parts or batches pass inspection the first time around, without needing rework or re-inspection. It's a direct measure of how well you're identifying issues early.
Target · Consistently >99% for your assigned inspection areas.If you inspect 100 lots in a week and only one needed a second look or rework, that's a 99% FPY. We want to see that number stay high, showing you're catching things efficiently.
Scrap Rate Attributed to Your Line/Area
This metric tracks the percentage of material that has to be scrapped because of defects found in your area of responsibility. A lower number means you're preventing waste.
Target · Maintain <1.5% scrap rate.If your line produces £100,000 worth of material and £1,000 of it ends up as scrap due to quality issues you're responsible for, that's a 1% scrap rate. We want to keep that tight.
Number of Inspections Completed per Shift
This measures your efficiency. We've got standard rates for different types of inspections, and you should be meeting those without cutting corners.
Target · Meet or exceed standard inspection rates for your assigned tasks.If a standard visual inspection takes 15 minutes per batch, and you're assigned 20 batches in a shift, you should comfortably complete those 20 inspections. It's about getting the work done thoroughly and on time.
Accuracy of Defect Identification
This isn't about how many you find, but how accurately you identify them. We sometimes do re-inspections or audits of your work to make sure you're not missing things or flagging good parts as bad.
Target · <2% re-inspection error rate.If we re-inspect 50 parts you've passed and find one actual defect you missed, that's a 2% error rate. We really want that number to be as close to zero as possible; missing a defect is a big deal.
Timely Issue Escalation
It's about knowing when to raise the alarm. Are you spotting potential problems early and bringing them to your supervisor or the production team's attention before they get out of hand?
- You're consistently flagging issues on the shop floor as soon as you see them, not waiting for the end of the shift. Production supervisors often tell us you're quick to react. Your supervisor rarely finds out about a problem from someone else first.
Drawing Interpretation Accuracy
Can you correctly read and apply complex engineering drawings, especially those with tricky GD&T callouts? This shows you truly understand the 'language of the print'.
- You rarely need to ask for clarification on standard drawings. When you do, it's usually for a genuinely ambiguous point, not a basic interpretation. You can confidently explain a GD&T callout to a junior inspector or operator.
Informal Mentorship Effectiveness
While you don't manage people, your experience means others will look to you. Are you good at guiding junior inspectors, helping them understand procedures, or showing them how to use a particular gauge?
- Junior inspectors often come to you for advice. Your supervisor mentions that new hires seem to pick things up quicker after spending time with you. You're patient and clear when explaining things, even under pressure.
