The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Warehouse Operations Lead (Level 004)
3-5 years as a LeadSkills to master
- As a Lead, you'll have mastered managing a specific function (e.g., Inventory Control, Outbound). To step up, you need to broaden your scope to understand the entire warehouse, take on P&L responsibility, and start managing other supervisors. You'll need to develop your strategic thinking and stakeholder management skills beyond your immediate team.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led a significant process improvement project from start to finish, with measurable results.
- Consistently achieved functional KPIs (e.g., 99.8% inventory accuracy for your area).
- Demonstrated strong informal leadership by mentoring junior staff or acting as a shift manager.
- Actively participated in budget planning discussions and shown an understanding of financial impact.
- Proactively identified and solved complex operational problems that crossed functional boundaries.
- 2
From Logistics or Supply Chain Analyst (Senior Level)
5-8 years as an analyst, plus 2-3 years in a supervisory roleSkills to master
- You'll have a strong analytical background, but you'll need to gain hands-on operational leadership experience. This means managing people, dealing with the daily realities of a warehouse floor, and translating data insights into practical, implementable changes. You'll need to develop your people management, safety compliance, and direct operational execution skills.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully transitioned from an analytical role to a direct operational supervisory position.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team of warehouse staff.
- Proven track record of implementing data-driven operational improvements.
- Strong understanding of warehouse safety protocols and compliance.
- Comfortable with the physical and dynamic nature of a warehouse environment.
- 3
From a Smaller Warehouse/Distribution Centre Manager
3-7 years managing a smaller facilitySkills to master
- You'll already have managerial experience, but you'll need to adapt to a larger, more complex operation with potentially higher volumes, more advanced automation, and a bigger team. This means scaling your leadership, budget management, and strategic planning capabilities. You'll also need to get to grips with our specific WMS and ERP systems.
You're ready to move on when
- Managed a warehouse operation with similar (or slightly smaller) scope and complexity.
- Demonstrated P&L responsibility and budget management for a logistics facility.
- Proven ability to lead and develop a team of warehouse professionals.
- Experience with WMS and ERP systems, even if different platforms.
- Successfully navigated growth or significant change within a previous warehouse role.
