How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

Lead Office Coordinator / Office Manager (L4)
3-5 years at L4Skills to master
- Mastering the end-to-end operations and budget for a single, complex office site. Leading small-to-medium office projects (e.g., a departmental move, a new amenity space). Gaining initial experience managing 1-2 junior team members. Building strong vendor relationships and negotiating smaller contracts.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering office operations within budget and to a high standard for a single site.
- Successfully leading at least two significant office projects from conception to completion.
- Demonstrating strong leadership and mentorship skills with junior team members, with positive feedback.
- Proactively identifying and implementing operational efficiencies that save time or money.

Facilities Coordinator (Large Organisation)
5-7 years in a large organisationSkills to master
- Deep specialisation in one or two areas of facilities management (e.g., building systems, H&S compliance, vendor management for a specific service line). Experience working within a larger, more structured operations team. Proving your ability to handle complex, technical facilities issues.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managing a portfolio of complex facilities projects or vendor relationships.
- Recognised as an expert in a specific facilities domain (e.g., HVAC, security systems, H&S).
- Demonstrating strong problem-solving skills for technical building issues.
- Ability to work effectively within a large, multi-layered organisational structure.
