The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Senior Import/Export Coordinator
3-5 years as a Senior CoordinatorSkills to master
- At the Senior level, you'd have mastered independent shipment management and complex problem-solving. To step up to Lead, you'd need to really focus on developing process improvement skills, taking ownership of specific compliance projects, and informally mentoring junior team members. It's about moving from 'solving the problem' to 'preventing the problem'.
You're ready to move on when
- You're the first person junior colleagues ask for help.
- You've successfully led at least two significant process improvement initiatives (e.g., reducing demurrage, streamlining documentation).
- You consistently provide clear, proactive advice to internal stakeholders without needing manager oversight.
- You've taken ownership of resolving complex customs issues from start to finish.
- You actively seek out opportunities to learn about new trade regulations and their implications.
- 2
From Logistics Specialist / Analyst (with Trade Focus)
5-8 years in a specialist logistics roleSkills to master
- If you're coming from a broader logistics analyst role, you'd need to deepen your specific trade compliance knowledge (HTS, Incoterms, FTAs) significantly. You'd also need to demonstrate strong project management skills for compliance initiatives and the ability to influence cross-functional teams.
You're ready to move on when
- You've completed specific trade compliance certifications (e.g., Customs Brokerage Licence).
- You've been responsible for analysing and optimising specific segments of the supply chain with a strong international component.
- You've worked closely with trade compliance teams and understand their challenges.
- You can articulate the financial impact of trade compliance decisions.
- You're comfortable with data analysis tools (Excel, Power BI) to drive insights.
