The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Senior Circular Economy Specialist (L3)
4-7 years in a senior specialist role.Skills to master
- Moving from owning workstreams to leading programmes, developing strong stakeholder influence across departments, and beginning to mentor junior team members. You'd also need to start thinking about budget management and strategic planning.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 3+ complex, cross-functional circularity projects from end-to-end.
- Consistently sought out for advice by peers and junior colleagues.
- Demonstrated ability to influence decisions at a senior manager level.
- Proactively identified and proposed new strategic initiatives, not just executing existing ones.
- 2
From Lead Circular Systems Strategist (L4)
2-4 years in a lead strategist role.Skills to master
- This is a very natural progression. You'd be building on your programme management and strategic influence, adding formal team leadership, budget ownership, and broader departmental accountability. The shift is from 'architecting' to 'managing the architects'.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managed multiple complex circularity programmes simultaneously.
- Built and influenced strategic roadmaps for circular operations.
- Mentored and informally guided a small team of analysts or specialists.
- Demonstrated strong financial acumen and understanding of P&L impact.
- 3

- Demonstrable experience in designing and scaling circular programmes.
- Strong leadership and change management skills in a complex operational environment.
