The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Influencer Campaign Manager (L2)
2-3 yearsSkills to master
- You'd need to consistently own 3-5 campaigns end-to-end, demonstrate strong negotiation skills for standard contracts, and start to show initiative in optimising campaign performance beyond basic metrics. Proving you can handle tricky creator situations independently is key.
You're ready to move on when
- You're the main point of contact for a roster of influencers, handling most issues without escalation.
- You've successfully managed campaigns with budgets up to £10K, hitting or exceeding targets.
- You've started to informally guide new team members or interns, sharing your knowledge.
- You proactively identify opportunities for campaign improvement or new creator partnerships.
- 2
From Senior Social Media Specialist (with creator focus)
3-4 yearsSkills to master
- You'd need to show direct experience managing creator relationships and campaigns, not just organic social. This means understanding contracts, attribution, and the full lifecycle of paid/gifted partnerships. You'd also need to demonstrate a shift from content creation to strategic partnership management.
You're ready to move on when
- You've managed at least 10-15 creator partnerships, from outreach to reporting, in previous roles.
- You can articulate the difference between organic social and paid influencer strategies.
- You've worked with budgets specifically allocated for creator content and can show ROI.
- You're familiar with social media analytics beyond engagement, looking at traffic and conversions.
- 3
From PR Manager (with digital/influencer focus)
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- While PR is great for relationships, you'd need to deepen your understanding of performance marketing metrics, attribution models, and the commercial side of influencer deals (e.g., usage rights, performance bonuses). Moving beyond earned media to paid partnerships is crucial.
You're ready to move on when
- You've successfully secured and managed partnerships with digital creators, not just traditional media.
- You can demonstrate how your PR efforts translated into measurable digital outcomes (e.g., website traffic, brand mentions).
- You're comfortable with contract negotiation beyond media placements, specifically for content creation and usage.
- You understand the nuances of ASA/FTC disclosure for sponsored content versus traditional press releases.
