The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From ISO / QMS Specialist (L2)
2-3 years at the L2 level.Skills to master
- At the L2 level, you'd have mastered managing document control, conducting parts of internal audits, and handling minor CAPAs. To step up, you'd need to show you can take full ownership of processes, identify systemic issues, and start informally guiding others.
You're ready to move on when
- You're regularly identifying opportunities for improvement, not just reacting to issues.
- You've successfully managed several complex CAPAs from start to finish without heavy supervision.
- You've been asked by your manager to help train a new starter or review a junior's work.
- You're comfortable presenting your findings to small groups and can articulate the 'why' behind compliance.
- 2
From Quality Engineer / EHS Coordinator
3-5 years in a dedicated Quality or EHS role.Skills to master
- You'd bring deep technical knowledge of specific quality tools (e.g., SPC, FMEA) or EHS regulations. To transition, you'd need to develop a broader understanding of integrated ISO management systems, audit methodologies, and the ability to influence across different functions.
You're ready to move on when
- You've actively participated in internal or external audits from your previous role.
- You've been responsible for implementing and monitoring specific quality or EHS controls.
- You're keen to move from a purely technical role to one with broader system ownership and influence.
- You've demonstrated an ability to document processes clearly and drive compliance within your area.
- 3
From External Auditor (Junior/Mid-level)
3-4 years as an external auditor for a certification body.Skills to master
- You'd already have strong audit skills and a deep understanding of ISO standards. The transition would involve learning our specific internal processes, building relationships with our operational teams, and shifting from an external 'policing' mindset to an internal 'partnering' and improvement mindset.
You're ready to move on when
- You're looking for a role where you can drive sustained improvement, not just assess compliance.
- You're keen to be part of an internal team and build long-term relationships.
- You're comfortable adapting your audit approach to an internal context, focusing on coaching and development.
- You've demonstrated strong communication and stakeholder management skills in client-facing roles.
