- Mastering end-to-end project leadership, informal team mentorship, advanced stakeholder management (especially upwards), and taking ownership of process improvements. You'll need to demonstrate a clear aptitude for managing people and strategic oversight.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering complex projects on time and budget with minimal oversight.
- Proactively identifying and solving systemic process issues, not just project-specific ones.
- Successfully mentoring junior team members and helping them grow.
- Building strong, trusted relationships with senior stakeholders across multiple departments.
- Taking initiative on departmental-level projects or initiatives beyond your direct project responsibilities.

From Project Manager (Non-Creative / Tech)
5-7 years in a senior PM role, plus 2-3 years in a creative/innovation contextSkills to master
- Adapting traditional project management skills to the unique ambiguities and fluid nature of creative and innovation work. Developing a strong understanding of design thinking, agile for creatives, and the nuances of managing creative talent. Building empathy for the creative process.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully transitioning from managing purely technical projects to those with significant creative or innovation components.
- Demonstrating an understanding of creative processes and how to protect creative teams.
- Proactively seeking out opportunities to learn about design thinking and lean startup methodologies.
- Building strong relationships with creative leads and understanding their challenges.
- Successfully leading cross-functional teams with diverse skill sets (e.g., designers, strategists, developers).

From Creative Agency Account Director / Operations Lead
6-8 years in an agency, with 3-5 years in a leadership/operations roleSkills to master
- Translating external agency operational excellence into an internal corporate innovation context. Understanding intrapreneurship challenges, internal stakeholder dynamics, and navigating corporate governance. Moving from client-focused delivery to internal capability building.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven experience managing large creative teams and complex client portfolios.
- Demonstrable ability to build and optimise operational processes within an agency setting.
- Strong financial management skills (P&L responsibility for accounts/departments).
- A clear interest in corporate innovation and a desire to build internal capabilities.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills with senior clients (which translates well to internal stakeholders).
