The scoreboard, and what is not on it. The hard targets, how often each is actually
looked at, and the quiet signals that never reach a dashboard.
Forecast Accuracy (Operating Profit)
How close your quarterly operating profit forecasts are to the actual results for your assigned business unit/region.
Target · Within ±3% variance for operating profit. If your Q3 forecast for Operating Profit was £5M, and the actual came in at £4.9M, that's a 2% variance, which is spot on.
Cost Savings/Efficiency Identified & Implemented
The measurable financial benefit from cost-saving initiatives or efficiency improvements you've identified, championed, and helped implement within your domain.
Target · Identify and support the implementation of initiatives totalling at least £250K in annualised savings or revenue uplift. Working with Operations, you identify a process bottleneck leading to £300K in wasted effort, and your financial model helps justify the investment to fix it.
Stakeholder Satisfaction (Business Unit Leadership)
How satisfied your key business unit VPs and GMs are with the quality, timeliness, and actionable nature of your financial support and insights.
Target · Average satisfaction score of 4.0 out of 5.0 in quarterly anonymous feedback. The VP of Sales praises your detailed ROI analysis that helped them secure budget for a new sales tool, saying it was 'invaluable'.
Team Development & Mentorship
The growth and capability development of the junior and mid-level accountants you directly manage or informally mentor.
Target · At least 80% of your direct reports meet or exceed their development goals, with at least one promotion within your team every 18 months. One of your direct reports, initially an L2, is now independently owning a complex month-end process and is ready for an L3 role, thanks to your guidance.
Strategic Influence & Challenge
Your ability to effectively challenge business assumptions, provide alternative perspectives, and influence strategic decisions with robust financial arguments.
- You're consistently invited to strategic planning sessions for your business unit. Your recommendations are genuinely considered and often adopted by senior leadership, even when they challenge existing views. You can point to specific instances where your financial analysis shifted a strategic direction or prevented a costly mistake. People come to you for your objective opinion, not just for numbers.
Clarity of Financial Narrative
How well you translate complex financial data into clear, concise, and actionable insights for non-financial audiences, ensuring they understand the 'so what'.
- Your presentations to VPs and GMs are praised for their clarity and directness. Business leaders can articulate the financial implications of their decisions based on your explanations. You receive feedback that your commentary 'tells the story' behind the numbers, rather than just listing them. You're able to simplify complex financial concepts without losing accuracy.
Proactive Risk & Opportunity Identification
Your initiative in identifying potential financial risks (e.g., cost overruns, revenue shortfalls) or opportunities (e.g., new market segments, efficiency gains) before they become critical issues.
- You regularly bring up potential issues or opportunities in weekly/monthly meetings before others have spotted them. You've developed new reports or analyses that highlight emerging trends. You're not waiting for questions
- you're providing answers and solutions before they're even asked. You're seen as someone who's always 'ahead of the curve' financially.
