The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Circular Economy Specialist (L2)
2-3 years at L2Skills to master
- At L2, you'd be owning specific projects and ensuring data accuracy. To step up to Senior, you need to master leading full workstreams, influencing cross-functional teams, and making independent technical decisions. Think about moving from 'doing the work' to 'designing the work' and guiding others.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 2-3 complex projects from start to finish with minimal supervision.
- Consistently identified and proposed solutions to compliance or circularity challenges, not just flagged them.
- Received positive feedback on your ability to influence peers in other departments.
- Demonstrated a strong understanding of LCA methodology and can interpret results confidently.
- 2
From Environmental Consultant (Specialist Level)
5-7 years in consultingSkills to master
- Consultants often have broad exposure, but moving in-house means mastering internal stakeholder management and the specifics of our product portfolio. You'll need to shift from advising to directly implementing and owning outcomes within a single organisation's context.
You're ready to move on when
- Experience managing client projects and delivering tangible, measurable results.
- Strong technical expertise in LCA, material flow analysis, or product compliance.
- Ability to adapt consulting frameworks to an internal corporate environment.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and influence within a client organisation.
- 3
From Product Compliance Engineer/Manager
5-8 years in product complianceSkills to master
- You'll bring excellent regulatory knowledge, but you'll need to expand your focus beyond just 'compliance' to 'circularity'. This means developing a deeper understanding of sustainable materials, circular business models, and the broader environmental impact of products beyond just hazardous substances.
You're ready to move on when
- Expertise in product-related environmental regulations (e.g., RoHS, WEEE, REACH).
- Experience working closely with engineering and product development teams.
- Demonstrated interest and self-study in circular economy principles and LCA.
- Ability to translate regulatory requirements into design and material selection guidelines.
