The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Senior Environmental Specialist (L3)
2-4 years as a Senior SpecialistSkills to master
- At the Senior level, you'd have mastered managing multiple compliance programmes and leading incident investigations. To step up to Lead, you'll need to demonstrate strong project management skills, the ability to interpret complex, ambiguous regulations independently, and a knack for influencing stakeholders without direct authority. Starting to mentor junior colleagues is also a big indicator.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 2-3 significant environmental projects (e.g., new permit application, major waste reduction initiative) from start to finish.
- Consistently provided clear, actionable interpretations of complex regulations to operational teams.
- Received positive feedback on your ability to influence cross-functional teams and gain buy-in for environmental initiatives.
- Actively mentored junior specialists, helping them develop their technical and problem-solving skills.
- 2
From Environmental Consultant (Senior/Principal level)
3-5 years at a consultancySkills to master
- As a consultant, you'd have a broad view of different industries and regulatory challenges. To transition, you'll need to demonstrate an ability to embed solutions within a single organisation, manage internal politics, and build long-term programmes rather than just project-based deliverables. Understanding our specific operational context and culture will be key.
You're ready to move on when
- Experience managing client relationships and delivering complex environmental projects for industrial clients.
- Proven ability to translate regulatory requirements into practical, business-specific solutions.
- Strong project management and client communication skills.
- A desire to move from external advisory to internal ownership and programme building.
