You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeding team performance KPIs.
- Successfully managing a budget of £500K-£2M.
- Developing and mentoring high-performing teams, with clear succession plans.
- Leading significant service improvement initiatives from conception to delivery.

Principal / Lead Environmental Health Officer (L4) with significant project/programme leadership
8-10 years at L4Skills to master
- Deep specialism in a critical area (e.g., air quality, infectious disease control), leading complex multi-agency programmes, and deputising for the Head of Service. You'll have proven your ability to influence beyond your direct reports.
You're ready to move on when
- Being recognised as the go-to technical authority in a specific EHS specialism.
- Successfully delivering complex, high-impact programmes (e.g., a city-wide air quality improvement programme).
- Demonstrating strong influencing skills with senior stakeholders and external partners.
- Taking on significant acting-up responsibilities for the Head of Service.

Senior Regulatory / Compliance Manager from a related industry
10-15 years in a related fieldSkills to master
- While the EHS specifics will be new, you'll have mastered large-scale regulatory compliance, risk management, and team leadership in a similarly complex, public-facing sector (e.g., financial services regulation, pharmaceutical compliance). You'll need to rapidly get up to speed on EHS legislation.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven ability to quickly adapt to new regulatory environments.
- A track record of leading large compliance functions and managing significant regulatory risk.
- Demonstrated success in influencing senior leadership and external regulators.
- Strong strategic and operational management skills directly transferable to a public protection context.
