The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Business Process Manager (L3) or Lead Business Process Architect (L4) from another company
You'd usually come in with 8-12 years of experience, having led significant workstreams or small programmes, and demonstrated strong leadership potential. We'd expect you to have managed projects end-to-end and mentored junior staff.Skills to master
- Strategic portfolio management, advanced stakeholder influence, budget ownership, and team development. You'd need to quickly get to grips with our specific business context and political landscape.
You're ready to move on when
- You've successfully delivered multiple complex process transformation projects (not just analyses) in your previous role.
- You can confidently articulate how your previous projects directly impacted the P&L or key strategic objectives.
- You've managed 2-3 direct reports or a significant project team for at least 2 years.
- You're comfortable presenting to and influencing C-suite or VP-level stakeholders.
- 2
Consultant from a Big 4 / Specialist Process Consultancy
Typically 10-15 years in consulting, having led engagement teams focused on process re-engineering, operational efficiency, or digital transformation. You'd have managed client relationships and project delivery.Skills to master
- Transitioning from a project-based consulting mindset to long-term ownership and internal team development. Understanding internal politics and building sustained relationships rather than short-term project wins.
You're ready to move on when
- You've led full project lifecycles, from problem definition to implementation, for multiple clients.
- You're adept at managing client expectations and navigating complex organisational structures.
- You've managed a team of consultants on engagements and are comfortable with performance management.
- You're looking for a role with long-term strategic impact within one organisation.
- 3
Internal Promotion from Lead Business Process Architect (L4)
Usually 2-4 years as a Lead Business Process Architect, having consistently excelled in leading complex programmes and demonstrating readiness for people management and strategic oversight.Skills to master
- Formal people management, budget ownership, and broader functional strategy. You'd need to step up from leading projects to leading people and a capability.
You're ready to move on when
- You've consistently delivered exceptional results on your projects and are seen as a go-to expert.
- You've informally mentored junior colleagues and shown a genuine interest in their development.
- You've taken on additional responsibilities beyond your core role, perhaps leading internal initiatives or committees.
- You've proactively engaged with senior leadership and demonstrated a strategic perspective beyond your immediate projects.
