The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Banking Operations Manager (L5) within the same organisation
3-5 years as an L5Skills to master
- Mastering full P&L accountability for a significant function, leading multi-manager teams (10-25 people), driving significant process improvement initiatives, and demonstrating strong cross-functional influence.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully delivered 2-3 major operational change programmes with measurable impact.
- Developed and promoted at least 2 direct reports into more senior management roles.
- Consistently achieved or exceeded operational efficiency and risk metrics for your function.
- Demonstrated ability to present complex operational issues and solutions to senior leadership.
- 2
Lead Banking Assistant / Operations Team Lead (L4) with advanced management experience
5-8 years as an L4, with a focus on leadership and strategic projectsSkills to master
- Beyond team leadership, you'd need to take on significant project leadership for strategic initiatives, manage larger budgets, and develop a broader understanding of enterprise-level risk and compliance. This often involves acting as a de facto 'Head of' for smaller operational units.
You're ready to move on when
- Accountable for the performance of a significant operational area, not just a team.
- Successfully managed projects with budgets exceeding £500K.
- Actively participated in strategic planning sessions for the wider operations department.
- Received strong feedback on your ability to influence and lead beyond your direct reporting lines.

Director of Operations from another Financial Institution
Direct entrySkills to master
- You'd be expected to bring equivalent strategic leadership experience, P&L management, and a proven track record of operational transformation from a comparable organisation. The focus here would be on adapting to our specific culture, systems, and regulatory nuances.
You're ready to move on when
- Held a Director-level role in a similar-sized or larger financial institution.
- Managed P&L for an operational unit of comparable scale (£2M-£10M+).
- Successfully led significant operational change programmes (e.g., system migrations, large-scale automation).
- Demonstrated strong external stakeholder management (regulators, vendors).
