How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

From CQHS Auditor (L2)
2-3 years as an L2Skills to master
- Independently leading smaller audits, writing clear findings, starting to perform basic root cause analysis, and getting comfortable presenting to site teams.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering high-quality audit reports without significant review notes.
- Proactively identifying complex non-conformances and proposing well-reasoned classifications.
- Demonstrating strong interpersonal skills during audit fieldwork and closing meetings.
- Showing initiative in learning new regulatory areas or audit methodologies.

From Site EHS or Quality Specialist
5-7 years in a site-based roleSkills to master
- Deep operational knowledge of CQHS systems, understanding of site-level challenges, experience with internal audits from the auditee's perspective, and a strong grasp of relevant regulations.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managing a site's CQHS programme and achieving good audit outcomes.
- Having a strong understanding of audit methodologies, even if not formally a lead auditor.
- Demonstrating an objective, analytical approach to site issues, not just a 'fix-it' mentality.
- A desire to move into a more investigative and assurance-focused role.

From External Consultant (Junior/Mid-Level)
3-5 years in a consulting firmSkills to master
- Experience conducting audits for various clients, strong report writing, project management skills, and adapting to different organisational cultures.
You're ready to move on when
- Experience managing client relationships and delivering audit projects on time and budget.
- A desire to apply audit skills within a single organisation for deeper impact.
- Strong command of various audit standards and methodologies.
- Ability to integrate into an internal team structure and collaborate effectively.
