It is designed as part of the Level 3 Engineering Technician Apprenticeship.

This unit provides learners with the skills to safely assemble fabricated components into marine sub-assemblies. It covers preparation, alignment, assembly sequencing, health and safety compliance, hazard identification, and the demonstration of required behaviours.

What you'll be able to do

  • Work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant regulations, directives and guidelines.

  • Correctly prepare and set up the components and faces to be joined.

  • Use four of the following types of components in the sub-assemblies produced: rolled sections, tubes/pipes, stiffeners, brackets/beam knees, flat plates, pressed plates, rolled plates, pre-fabricated components.
  • Use the appropriate methods and techniques to assemble the components in their correct positions.
  • Assemble platework components, using two of the following methods: temporary tack welding, pin-table jig, panel line fabrication, riveting, mechanically fastened (nuts and bolts), adhesive bonding, fairing aids.
  • Secure the components using the specified connectors and securing devices.
  • Check the completed assembly to ensure that all operations have been completed and the finished assembly meets the required specification.
  • Produce marine sub-assemblies which meet all of the following standards: all components are correctly assembled and aligned in accordance with the specification, overall dimensions are within specification tolerances, assemblies meet appropriate geometric tolerances (square, straight, angles, free from twists), where appropriate, pitches of erection holes meet specification requirements, completed sub-assemblies have secure and firm joints and are clean and free from burrs or flash.
  • Deal promptly and effectively with problems within their control and report those that cannot be solved.
