The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Associate Cloud Network Engineer (L1)
1-2 yearsSkills to master
- Independent troubleshooting of common network issues, making minor IaC modifications, taking ownership of specific network components (e.g., a set of VPNs).
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently resolves P2/P3 incidents without escalation.
- Successfully implements routine network changes with minimal supervision.
- Proactively identifies and flags potential network issues from monitoring tools.
- Contributes positively to team discussions and documentation.
- 2
From Traditional Network Engineer (On-Prem Focus)
2-3 years (with dedicated cloud training)Skills to master
- Deep understanding of cloud provider networking constructs (VPC/VNet, Transit Gateways), Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), and cloud-native security concepts.
You're ready to move on when
- Achieved at least one associate-level cloud networking certification (e.g., AWS Certified Advanced Networking - Specialty).
- Can demonstrate hands-on experience deploying and managing cloud network resources using IaC.
- Understands the differences and similarities between on-prem and cloud networking paradigms.
- Comfortable with basic scripting (Python) for automation in a cloud context.
- 3
From DevOps/SRE with Network Interest
1-2 years (with networking specialisation)Skills to master
- Deepening knowledge of routing protocols (BGP), advanced firewalling concepts, network observability tools, and specific cloud networking services.
You're ready to move on when
- Already proficient with IaC (Terraform) and CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure.
- Can demonstrate a strong interest and foundational knowledge in core networking concepts.
- Has experience troubleshooting application connectivity issues and understands the network's role.
- Eager to specialise and become a deep subject matter expert in cloud networking.
