The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Strategic Projects Associate (Internal)
3-5 years at the Senior Associate levelSkills to master
- Leading smaller, less complex projects end-to-end, effectively managing internal stakeholders, and demonstrating strong analytical rigour. You'll need to show you can step up to managing more ambiguity.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivers projects on time and to a high standard.
- Receives positive feedback on stakeholder engagement and influence.
- Proactively identifies and structures new strategic problems.
- Has successfully mentored junior team members.
- 2
Management Consultant (External)
5-8 years at a top-tier management consulting firm (e.g., McKinsey, Bain, BCG, Big 4)Skills to master
- Hypothesis-driven problem solving, executive communication, client management, and delivering under pressure. You'll need to adapt to an internal corporate environment and build relationships without the 'consultant' badge.
You're ready to move on when
- Experience leading engagement teams and owning client relationships.
- Proven ability to structure complex problems and develop actionable recommendations.
- Strong track record of presenting to senior client leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to transition from advisory to execution-focused roles.
- 3
Experienced Project/Programme Lead (Internal/External)
8-10 years in a dedicated project or programme management role in a relevant industry.Skills to master
- Robust project governance, risk management, budget control, and cross-functional team leadership. You'll need to develop a stronger strategic lens, moving beyond just 'delivery' to 'what should we be delivering?'.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managed large-scale, complex programmes with significant budgets.
- Strong PMP or PRINCE2 certification (or equivalent experience).
- Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders and manage complex dependencies.
- A clear interest and aptitude for strategic problem-solving beyond pure execution.
