3What this role really is

A Sales Director owns a patch of business and drives deals from first contact through to close.

4What you'd actually use

The tools this job runs on, and how well you'd need to know each one.

Managing your pipeline, logging all activities (calls, emails, meetings), updating deal stages and forecast categories, running basic reports on your own performance. You'll live in Salesforce.

Outreach.io / Salesloft Intermediate

Executing pre-defined sales sequences, managing your daily tasks (calls, emails, LinkedIn messages), and tracking engagement with prospects. You'll use this to scale your outreach.

LinkedIn Sales Navigator Intermediate

Building targeted lead lists, researching accounts and key contacts before calls, and engaging with prospects on a professional social platform.

Gong.io / Chorus.ai Basic

Reviewing your own recorded calls for self-coaching, using transcripts to quickly summarise meetings or pull out key action items. Your manager will also use this to coach you.

Tableau / Power BI Basic

Reading and interpreting pre-built dashboards on your pipeline health, quota attainment, and activity metrics. You won't be building them, but you'll understand what they're telling you.

5What you get to decide, and how that grows

Power in a job isn't your title. It's what you're allowed to decide. Here's how it grows as you move up.

The choiceComing in Where you are nowThe step above
Discounting & Pricing No authority. Must escalate all discount requests to supervisor. Can approve standard discounts up to 10% within established guidelines. Anything above requires Sales Manager approval. Can approve discounts up to 20% for strategic deals. Requires Director approval for anything higher or non-standard terms.
Deal Strategy & Progression Follows prescribed sales playbook. All major strategy shifts reviewed by supervisor. Independently defines and executes deal strategy for most opportunities. Consults Sales Manager on complex or high-value deals. Defines and leads strategy for complex, multi-stakeholder deals. Mentors junior team members on deal strategy.
Resource Allocation (Internal) Requests support from supervisor (e.g., for a demo specialist). Can directly request support from pre-sales engineers or product specialists for specific deals, informing Sales Manager. Coordinates cross-functional resources (Marketing, Legal, Product) for major initiatives or enterprise deals, with Director awareness.

6How you'll be judged

The scoreboard, and what is not on it. The hard targets, how often each is actually looked at, and the quiet signals that never reach a dashboard.

Quota Attainment
The percentage of your assigned revenue target you achieve each quarter and year.
Target · 100% or more of your quarterly and annual revenue quota.

If your quarterly quota is £250,000 and you close £265,000, that's 106% attainment. Simple as that.

Pipeline Coverage
The total value of your active sales opportunities compared to your remaining quota.
Target · Maintain a 3-4x pipeline-to-quota ratio at all times. So, if you've got £100K left to close, you should have £300K-£400K in active deals.

If your remaining quarterly quota is £150,000, you should have at least £450,000 in qualified pipeline opportunities to hit your target comfortably.

Average Deal Size
The average value of the deals you're closing.
Target · Increase average deal size by 10% year-over-year, or maintain above the team average.

If last year your average deal was £20,000, we'd want to see that closer to £22,000 this year, showing you're landing bigger fish.

Conversion Rate (Opportunity to Won)
The percentage of qualified opportunities that you successfully convert into closed-won deals.
Target · Consistently achieve a 25% or higher conversion rate from qualified opportunity to closed-won.

If you've worked 20 qualified opportunities in a quarter and closed 5 of them, that's a 25% conversion rate. We're looking for efficiency here.

Deal Strategy Quality
How well you plan and execute your sales strategy for each major opportunity, considering client needs, competitive landscape, and internal resources.
  • You're consistently bringing well-thought-out deal strategies to your manager for review. You can articulate the 'why' behind each step, identify potential risks, and have a clear path to close. Your manager sees you 'getting to power' and building strong business cases, not just pitching features.
CRM Hygiene & Data Accuracy
How accurately and consistently you update Salesforce (or our CRM) with deal stages, next steps, contact information, and forecast categories.
  • Your pipeline reports are always up-to-date and reliable, without your manager having to chase you for updates. Forecast calls are productive because the data is clean. You're not the person who gets asked 'What's the next step on this deal?' and has to scramble to remember.
Internal Collaboration & Stakeholder Management
How effectively you work with internal teams like Marketing, Product, and Customer Success to support your deals and represent the client's needs.
  • You're known as someone who brings in the right internal experts at the right time. Product and Marketing teams value your feedback because it's constructive and well-informed. You don't just complain about leads
  • you offer solutions and work with Marketing to refine targeting.
Customer Satisfaction & Handover Quality
How well you set expectations with new clients and ensure a smooth transition to the Customer Success team post-sale.
  • Customer Success reports positive feedback from clients you've brought on, noting that expectations were clear and the handover was seamless. There are no nasty surprises for the client or our CS team after the deal closes, meaning fewer churn risks down the line.

7Would you like it

Both sides. What people enjoy, and what grinds them down.

What people enjoy
Hitting Targets & Winning

You get a real buzz from closing a deal, especially a tough one. Seeing your name on the leaderboard or getting that commission statement is a strong motivator. You're competitive, but in a healthy way, always pushing yourself to do better.

You've just closed a significant deal that was highly contested. You feel a genuine sense of accomplishment, not just relief, and you're already thinking about the next one.

Solving Customer Problems

You genuinely enjoy understanding a client's challenges and finding a way our product can make their lives easier or their business better. The satisfaction comes from being a trusted advisor, not just a salesperson.

A client tells you how much time they've saved or how much more efficient they've become because of your solution. That positive feedback is a huge win for you.

Autonomy & Ownership

You like being in charge of your own schedule, your own pipeline, and your own success. You thrive when given a goal and the freedom to figure out the best way to get there, rather than being micromanaged.

You've designed a new outreach sequence that's working really well for your territory, and you're proud of the results you're seeing from your own initiative.

What frustrates people
  • Dealing with prospects who ghost you after multiple meetings. It's frustrating when you've invested time and effort into a deal that just disappears.
  • Internal bureaucracy slowing down deal approvals or contract reviews. Sometimes, getting a deal over the line feels like an uphill battle against our own processes.
  • Having to constantly update CRM fields when you'd rather be selling. Yes, it's necessary, but it can feel like a chore.
  • Unrealistic market expectations or product gaps that make selling harder. You'll sometimes feel like you're selling with one hand tied behind your back.
  • The pressure of the 'hockey stick' quarter, where 70% of your deals need to close in the last two weeks. It's stressful, no two ways about it.
What this role does not give you
  • A predictable, 9-to-5 routine. Sales hours can be flexible, but they often extend into evenings for client calls or late nights at quarter-end.
  • Guaranteed success. Your income is directly tied to your performance, so if you don't sell, you don't earn as much. It's not a fixed salary role.
  • A quiet, solitary work environment. You'll be on calls, in meetings, and constantly interacting with people, both internally and externally.

8Who you work with

Your direct impact is on revenue generation and client acquisition. You're literally bringing in the money that keeps the lights on and allows us to grow. Every deal you close contributes directly to our top-line growth and market expansion. You're also a crucial feedback loop for Product and Marketing, giving them real-world insights from the market.

Inside the business
  • Your Sales Manager (for coaching and approvals)
  • Marketing Team (for lead generation and campaign feedback)
  • Product Team (to share customer feedback and understand roadmaps)
  • Sales Operations (for CRM support, reporting, and process improvements)
  • Customer Success (for smooth handovers and understanding client health after the sale)
  • Finance (for pricing approvals and contract terms)
Outside the business
  • Prospective Clients (from individual contributors up to C-level executives)
  • Partners (if we work with channel partners for certain deals)
  • Industry Contacts (for networking and market intelligence)

9What you need before you start

Not a wish list. The things you would be expected to already have.

  • A proven track record of consistently hitting or exceeding individual sales targets in a previous quota-carrying role (2+ years). We'll want to see evidence of this.
  • Demonstrable experience managing a full sales cycle, from prospecting to close, in a B2B environment.
  • Strong understanding and practical application of a recognised sales methodology (e.g., MEDDPICC, BANT, Challenger Sale).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and persuasively.
  • Proficiency with CRM software (ideally Salesforce) for pipeline management and reporting.

10What to practise next

Where the job is going, and what to do about it starting this week.

Advanced CRM Customisation & Reporting

As you progress, you'll need to do more than just input data. You'll want to build custom reports that give you specific insights, and maybe even tweak your CRM view to optimise your workflow. Understanding the underlying structure of Salesforce will become more important.

Custom Report Types · Dashboard Design Principles

  • This month: Explore the 'Reports' and 'Dashboards' tabs in Salesforce. Try to replicate a report your manager uses.
  • Next quarter: Complete a free online Salesforce Trailhead module on 'Reports & Dashboards for Sales Cloud'.
  • Month 3-6: Work with Sales Operations to build one custom report that gives you a unique insight into your territory performance.

Quick win: Learn how to save and modify existing reports in Salesforce to filter for your specific needs. It's a small step, but it gives you more control.

11Staying current once you are in

What people here do to keep up
  • Regularly read sales books, blogs, and industry publications to stay updated on best practices and market trends. The sales world moves fast, so continuous learning is key.
  • Attend sales conferences or webinars (both internal and external) to network and learn from other top performers.
  • Seek out mentorship from more experienced Sales Managers or Directors within the company. They've usually seen it all.
  • Actively participate in internal sales training sessions and role-playing exercises to sharpen your skills and learn from your peers.

How you actually get there, here

How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

    • Strong understanding of our Ideal Customer Profile and qualification criteria.
    • Excellent communication skills and ability to build rapport quickly with prospects.

    • Ability to independently manage a pipeline and accurately forecast deals.
    • Positive feedback from clients and internal teams on deal execution and professionalism.

15Where this role leads

The long view: This work can lead to roles managing multiple sales teams, such as Director of Sales, or further into VP of Sales and Chief Revenue Officer positions overseeing wider revenue strategy.

16Pay and demand

Pay & demand

The figure is the median for full-time employees in the ONS occupation this job title codes to (Marketing, sales and advertising directors), from the April 2025 survey, about six months old when published, as ASHE always is. It is that occupation's middle, not this role's. Half earn more.

The ten Future Fluencies

Zavmo analysis

The credential is what you can do today. These are what keep you valuable.

A qualification proves you can do the job as it's defined today. These ten are what decide whether you're still the obvious person for it in five years. They're the capabilities employers are now writing into senior roles faster than people are learning them. Zavmo weaves them through whatever you study, so you come out with both: the credential and the fluency.

The highlighted ones are the Fluencies your role leans on hardest, from how Sales Director is actually changing.

Where it leads next, rung by rung

Where it leads

The career path, and where it branches

Sales Director is a start, not a ceiling. Each step below asks for new skills and hands back more autonomy.

  1. Senior Sales Director (L3)

2-3 years (from Mid-Level Sales Director)

You'll be handling larger, more complex enterprise deals, consistently exceeding your quota, and informally mentoring newer Sales Directors. You'll become a go-to expert on specific products or market segments.

    • Complex Value Engineering (building detailed ROI models for large clients)
    • Cross-Functional Leadership (leading internal teams to support major deals)
    • Mentorship & Coaching (guiding junior team members on best practices)
  2. Sales Manager (L4)

3-5 years (from Mid-Level Sales Director)

This is a shift into leadership, where you'll be responsible for managing a team of 6-8 Sales Directors, their collective quota, and their development. It's less about your own deals and more about enabling your team.

    • Team Pipeline Management & Forecasting (rolling up team forecasts, identifying risks)
    • Territory Planning & Quota Setting (designing fair and effective territories for your team)
    • Sales Methodology Implementation (ensuring your team adheres to best practices and processes)
Working with AI on the job

Working with AI

Where AI is starting to help

Let's be real, sales isn't just about talking to people; it's also about a fair bit of admin, research, and planning. What if you could get some of that back? Our AI Hub is all about giving you back valuable selling time.

We're investing heavily in AI tools to make your life easier and your sales process more efficient. For a Sales Director like you, this means less time on grunt work and more time actually selling, building relationships, and strategising. Think of AI as your personal sales assistant, taking care of the tedious bits.

Automated CRM Updates

AI tools can listen to your calls (with consent, of course) and automatically log activities, update deal stages, and even suggest next steps in Salesforce. No more typing up call notes for an hour after a busy day—it's done for you.

Smarter Prospecting & Research

Imagine AI sifting through LinkedIn Sales Navigator, news articles, and company reports to give you a concise brief on a prospect before your call. It'll highlight key decision-makers, recent company events, and potential pain points. You'll walk into every meeting feeling much more prepared.

AI-Powered Call Coaching

Tools like Gong or Chorus analyse your sales calls, identifying what's working and what's not. It'll flag moments where you talked too much, missed a buying signal, or handled an objection brilliantly. This means faster, more objective coaching without your manager having to listen to every single call.

Drafting Follow-ups & Proposals

After a meeting, AI can draft personalised follow-up emails or even initial proposal outlines based on your conversation and our product library. You'll just need to review and tweak, saving you loads of time on written comms.
