The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Sales Representative (SDR/AE)
2-4 years in a direct sales roleSkills to master
- Deep product knowledge, understanding of the sales cycle, objection handling, closing techniques, and a natural ability to explain complex ideas. You'll need to show you can teach, not just sell.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently hitting or exceeding sales targets.
- Often asked by peers for advice or coaching.
- Enjoy mentoring new hires or less experienced reps.
- Can clearly articulate 'how' they achieved sales success, not just 'what' they did.
- 2
From Sales Training Coordinator / Administrator
2-3 years in a support roleSkills to master
- Strong organisational skills, familiarity with LMS systems, content management, basic instructional design principles, and a good understanding of our internal sales processes. You'll need to step up to delivering content.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managed training logistics for multiple programmes.
- Proactively suggested improvements to training content or delivery.
- Has taken initiative to create small job aids or support materials.
- Demonstrates a keen interest in learning and delivering training sessions.
- 3
From Customer Success / Account Management
3-5 years in a customer-facing roleSkills to master
- Deep understanding of customer needs and pain points, strong communication and relationship-building skills, and product expertise. You'll need to learn the 'sales' side of the house and how to teach proactive selling.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently high customer satisfaction scores.
- Often involved in product training for customers or internal teams.
- Can articulate how our products solve real-world customer problems.
- Shows a desire to influence the sales process earlier in the customer journey.
