Your ability to identify the root cause of experimental failures and propose practical solutions, rather than just repeating the same steps.
- You'll be able to articulate why an experiment failed (e.g., 'I think the pH of the buffer was off because the stock solution was old') and suggest a logical next step. Senior colleagues will seek your input on unexpected results, showing they trust your analytical eye.
Proactive Lab Management
Taking initiative to ensure the lab is well-stocked, equipment is maintained, and common protocols are up-to-date, without being prompted.
- You'll notice we're running low on a critical reagent and order it before we run out. You'll flag a piece of equipment that's making a strange noise. You might even suggest a small improvement to a common protocol, making it more efficient for everyone.
Informal Mentorship & Support
Your willingness and ability to guide and support junior R&D Assistants, helping them get unstuck or learn new techniques.
- New joiners will naturally come to you with questions about how to 'passage cells' or 'make up a buffer'. You'll patiently walk them through it, or review their ELN entries, helping them avoid common pitfalls. The Lab Manager might ask you to show a new person how to use the HPLC.

How effectively you communicate experimental progress, unexpected results, and potential issues to your senior colleagues.
- Your experimental updates will be concise and clear, highlighting key findings or problems without excessive jargon. When something goes wrong, you'll explain it clearly and suggest what you think happened, rather than just saying 'it failed'.
