2AI and this work

Will AI change your work as a Pricing Analyst?

Nobody can say exactly how. Here is what this job is being asked for next, and where to start.

The new skill this role is being asked for

  • Prompt Engineering & LLM Integration (for Data Tasks)
Why each one is rising

The future skills this job leans on

We'll only ever tell you what we can actually back up. No hype, no scare tactics.

What happens when you start

Next, a free account. We build your Pricing Analyst plan as you set up, starting with a Future Fluency module on using AI in your job. No card.

Your first Future Fluency module is free. After that, your AI tutor is £70 a month.

3What this role really is

A pricing analyst checks that products are priced correctly across different countries, using data to spot problems and opportunities.

4What you'd actually use

The tools this job runs on, and how well you'd need to know each one.

Microsoft Excel Intermediate

You'll be using VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, basic charting, and cleaning provided datasets. Expect to spend a fair bit of time in Excel, so you need to be comfortable navigating complex spreadsheets.

Power BI / Tableau User

You'll consume and interpret pre-built dashboards, applying filters and exporting data for ad-hoc analysis. You won't be building dashboards from scratch yet, but you'll need to understand how to get the information you need from them.

SAP S/4HANA Basic

You'll learn to navigate specific modules (like SD for sales data or CO-PA for profitability analysis) to extract transactional sales data, pricing conditions, and cost information. It's about getting the right data out.

Salesforce Read-Only

You'll look up account details, opportunity stages, and deal-specific discount approvals to understand the context behind pricing requests or sales performance. It's about getting a view of the sales pipeline.

Pricefx / Vendavo N/A or Basic Training

You might use the system to look up approved price lists or historical data, but you won't be configuring logic or running simulations at this level. We'll provide training if you need to use it.

5What you get to decide, and how that grows

Power in a job isn't your title. It's what you're allowed to decide. Here's how it grows as you move up.

The choiceComing in Where you are nowThe step above
Price List Updates Execute updates based on fully approved changes. Escalate any discrepancies or unclear instructions to your manager. Not applicable to this level. Not applicable to this level.
Data Analysis Methodology Use established templates and methods. Consult your manager for any deviations or new approaches. Not applicable to this level. Not applicable to this level.
Stakeholder Communication Respond to simple data requests. For anything complex or requiring interpretation, draft responses for manager review. Not applicable to this level. Not applicable to this level.

6How you'll be judged

The scoreboard, and what is not on it. The hard targets, how often each is actually looked at, and the quiet signals that never reach a dashboard.

Analysis Accuracy Rate
The percentage of your reports and price list updates that are free from errors.
Target · >99.5% accuracy on all price list updates and standard reports.

If you update 100 price points in a month, we'd expect no more than one error. Catching a £50,000 pricing mistake before it goes live is a huge win.

Ad-Hoc Request Turnaround
How quickly you acknowledge and deliver on urgent, smaller data requests from internal teams.
Target · Acknowledged within 1 hour, delivered within 1 business day for standard requests.

Sales asks for a quick price check for a new region. You get back to them within the hour, and they have the data by the end of the day.

Data Integrity Contribution
The number of times you spot and flag inconsistencies or errors in our core pricing data sources.
Target · Identify and report at least 2 significant data quality issues per quarter.

You notice that the cost data for a particular product line in Germany hasn't been updated in six months, despite new supplier agreements. You flag it, and we fix it, preventing potential underpricing.

Proactive Learning & Curiosity
You're not just waiting to be told what to do; you're asking questions, trying to understand the 'why' behind the numbers, and picking up new skills.
  • You regularly ask thoughtful questions during team meetings, you're always keen to learn new Excel functions or Power BI tricks, and you actively seek feedback on your work to improve.
Team Collaboration & Support
How well you work with your immediate team and other departments, offering help and being a reliable pair of hands.
  • You're seen as someone who's easy to work with, you offer to help colleagues when they're swamped, and you share any useful insights or tips you pick up with the wider team.
Process Adherence & Documentation
Following our established ways of working for pricing updates and making sure your own work is well-documented.
  • Your work is always organised, easy for someone else to pick up, and you stick to the agreed processes for price changes and reporting, meaning fewer mistakes and less rework for everyone.

7Would you like it

Both sides. What people enjoy, and what grinds them down.

What people enjoy
Solving Puzzles with Data

You genuinely enjoy digging into complex spreadsheets, trying to make sense of disparate data points, and finding the 'story' hidden within the numbers. It's like a daily treasure hunt.

Spending an afternoon trying to reconcile sales data from two different systems, finally figuring out the mapping error, and seeing the numbers align.

Learning & Growing

You're constantly asking questions, keen to understand new pricing concepts, and eager to pick up new tools or analytical techniques. You see every task as a chance to learn something new.

Volunteering to take on a task using a new feature in Power BI, or asking your manager to explain the nuances of FX impact on a specific product.

Making a Tangible Impact

You get satisfaction from knowing your accurate reports and data insights are directly helping the business make better decisions, even if you're not the one making the final call.

Seeing a price change you helped implement go live, and then tracking its performance in the weeks that follow.

What frustrates people
  • The 'Strategic Discount' Charade: You'll see sales teams constantly pushing for 'strategic' discounts on 'must-win' deals, which often just becomes the new standard price. You'll be the one processing these, even if you know they're eroding margin.
  • ERP Hell: Trying to get clean, consistent data for a global price analysis can feel like pulling teeth. Different regions use different systems, or the same system is configured differently, meaning you spend loads of time just cleaning and mapping data.
  • Gut-Feel Overrides: You'll put in hours building a data-driven model, only for an executive to say, 'My gut tells me we should just make it £9.99,' and all your work gets ignored. It happens.
  • Being the 'Sales Prevention Department': You'll often be perceived as the person who says 'no' or slows down deals, even though you're protecting the company's profitability. It can feel a bit thankless at times.
  • Data Scavenger Hunts: The transactional data you need is never in one, easy place. You'll have to ask Finance for cost files, pull reports from Salesforce, get market data from Marketing, and then try to make it all tie out. It rarely does perfectly.
What this role does not give you
  • Full autonomy over strategic pricing decisions – you're here to support, not lead, those big calls.
  • A perfectly clean, well-organised data environment – expect to get your hands dirty with messy data.
  • A 'set it and forget it' routine – priorities and requests will change, sometimes daily.

8Who you work with

Your work directly supports the accuracy and efficiency of our international pricing operations. Getting the data right means our sales teams can quote correctly, our finance teams can report accurately, and ultimately, our business makes more informed decisions about how we price our products globally. Think of yourself as a vital cog in the machine that keeps our international revenue healthy.

Inside the business
  • Your Manager (Senior International Pricing Analyst)
  • Sales Operations teams (for data and price queries)
  • Finance (for margin analysis and cost data)
  • Product Marketing (for product details and value propositions)

9What you need before you start

Not a wish list. The things you would be expected to already have.

  • A genuine curiosity about how businesses make money and how pricing works globally.
  • Solid numerical skills – you should be comfortable working with numbers and spreadsheets.
  • A keen eye for detail; you're the kind of person who spots a typo or a misaligned column.
  • Eagerness to learn new software and analytical techniques.
  • The ability to ask good questions when you don't understand something, rather than guessing.

10What to practise next

Where the job is going, and what to do about it starting this week.

Advanced Data Visualisation & Storytelling

It's not enough to just present numbers; you'll need to tell a compelling story with them. Leaders are drowning in data, so the ability to distil complex insights into clear, actionable visualisations is becoming paramount.

Dashboard Design Principles · Choosing the Right Chart · Narrative Structure for Data · Audience-Specific Communication

  • This week: Pay close attention to how your manager or senior analysts present data. What works well?
  • This month: Take an online course on data visualisation best practices (e.g., from Coursera or Udemy).
  • Month 2: Redesign one of your regular reports to be more visually appealing and easier to understand.
  • Month 3: Practice explaining a complex data point to a non-technical friend or family member. Get their feedback.

Quick win: Start using more visual elements (charts, conditional formatting) in your Excel reports today. Think about the 'so what?' for every piece of data you present.

11Staying current once you are in

What people here do to keep up
  • Taking online courses in advanced Excel functions, Power Query, or an introduction to Power BI (e.g., on LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, Udemy).
  • Reading books or articles on pricing strategy basics – get familiar with the language and concepts.
  • Attending industry webinars or virtual conferences on pricing or commercial analytics to see what's new.
  • Joining professional networking groups for pricing or commercial professionals to learn from others.

12The rising capability

Prompt Engineering & LLM Integration (for Data Tasks)

This is critical within 6 months – it's already here, not some distant future. Competitors are using tools like ChatGPT and Claude to draft reports, summarise data, and even help clean messy spreadsheets in minutes, not hours. Analysts who get good at this will simply outproduce their peers.

16Pay and demand

Pay & demand

The figure is the median for full-time employees in the ONS occupation this job title codes to (Finance and investment analysts and advisers), from the April 2025 survey, about six months old when published, as ASHE always is. It is that occupation's middle, not this role's. Half earn more.

The ten Future Fluencies

Zavmo analysis

The credential is what you can do today. These are what keep you valuable.

A qualification proves you can do the job as it's defined today. These ten are what decide whether you're still the obvious person for it in five years. They're the capabilities employers are now writing into senior roles faster than people are learning them. Zavmo weaves them through whatever you study, so you come out with both: the credential and the fluency.

The highlighted ones are the Fluencies your role leans on hardest, from how Pricing Analyst is actually changing.

Where it leads next, rung by rung

Where it leads

The career path, and where it branches

Pricing Analyst is a start, not a ceiling. Each step below asks for new skills and hands back more autonomy.

  1. International Pricing Analyst (Level 002)

2-3 years in the Pricing Analyst role.

This is your natural next step, moving from executing tasks under heavy guidance to independently owning specific analytical processes and contributing to smaller projects.

    • Building basic dashboards in Power BI/Tableau.
    • Writing simple SQL queries for data extraction.
    • Conducting basic competitive pricing analysis independently.
    • More in-depth understanding of price elasticity and value drivers.
Working with AI on the job

Working with AI

Where AI is starting to help

Let's be real, a lot of entry-level analysis involves repetitive tasks and data cleaning. But what if you could offload a significant chunk of that to AI? We're not talking about replacing you; we're talking about making your job more interesting and impactful.

Here at International_Business_Global, we're all about working smarter, not harder. We're actively exploring and integrating AI tools to free up our team from the mundane, so you can focus on the stuff that actually requires your brainpower and commercial judgment. For a Pricing Analyst, this means less time wrestling with spreadsheets and more time learning the business.

Automated Data Harmonizer

Imagine AI tools that automatically ingest, clean, and map transactional sales data from all those disparate regional ERP systems into one single, analysis-ready dataset. You'll spend less time wrestling with VLOOKUPs and more time actually looking at the numbers.

Elasticity & Segmentation Co-Pilot

You won't be building complex ML models from scratch, but you'll be using AI-powered tools that help senior analysts uncover 'value pockets' and predict price elasticity. Your job will be to learn to interpret these outputs and spot the commercial implications, not just crunching the numbers yourself.

Competitive Intelligence Agent

Forget trawling competitor websites. We're setting up AI agents to continuously monitor competitor pricing, packaging, and promotions. You'll get a summarised daily brief, meaning you're always in the loop without the manual effort.

Justification & Comms Drafter

Need to draft an internal email explaining a minor price adjustment? Use a GenAI assistant to create the first draft. It'll help you communicate clearly and quickly, freeing up time for more complex tasks. It's like having a personal writing assistant.
