The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Lead Process Architect (L4)
3-5 years at L4Skills to master
- Moving from designing individual solutions to architecting enterprise-wide programmes, managing larger teams, and developing strategic influencing skills with the C-suite. You'll need to demonstrate P&L accountability and talent development.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 2-3 major cross-functional transformation programmes with significant business impact.
- Consistently mentored and developed junior architects or specialists.
- Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders and secure buy-in for complex technical roadmaps.
- Taken on informal leadership roles beyond technical architecture, e.g., representing the function in strategic planning.
- 2
From Manager, Intelligent Automation (L5)
2-4 years at L5Skills to master
- Scaling your management capabilities from a departmental level to a business unit level, including managing managers. You'll need to deepen your strategic planning, P&L ownership, and board-level communication skills, moving from managing a portfolio to defining the overall transformation strategy.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managed a team of 10-25 (including managers) and consistently delivered on departmental objectives.
- Owned a significant automation pipeline and budget (£500K-£2M) with demonstrable ROI.
- Developed strong relationships with peer directors and VPs across the organisation.
- Proactively identified and championed new strategic initiatives that had a broader business unit impact.
- 3
From External Consulting (Senior Principal/Partner)
Typically 15+ years in consultingSkills to master
- Transitioning from advising to directly owning and executing transformation within an organisation. This requires adapting to internal politics, building a permanent team, and navigating the day-to-day realities of operational delivery rather than project-based engagements.
You're ready to move on when
- Extensive experience leading large-scale operational transformation engagements for major clients.
- Proven ability to build and maintain relationships at the C-suite level.
- Demonstrated capability to translate strategic recommendations into actionable implementation plans.
- A clear understanding of the difference between consulting and in-house leadership, and a genuine desire for the latter.
