The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Production Manager (Single Site)
5-8 yearsSkills to master
- Mastering site-level KPIs (OEE, FPY), leading continuous improvement projects, managing a large team of operators and supervisors, and effectively managing a site budget. You'd be the person who made a single factory sing.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeding site production targets and quality metrics.
- Successfully leading multiple Lean/Six Sigma projects with documented savings.
- Demonstrating strong leadership and development of your direct reports.
- Proactively identifying and solving complex site-level operational problems.
- 2
Regional Operations Programme Manager
6-10 yearsSkills to master
- Managing complex operational programmes or projects across multiple sites within a specific region. This means you're used to getting different sites to work together on a common goal, often without direct authority over them.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully delivered multi-site operational improvement programmes.
- Proven ability to influence and collaborate with various plant managers.
- Strong project management skills, especially in a manufacturing context.
- Experience navigating regional cultural and regulatory differences.
- 3
Head of Engineering / Manufacturing Engineering
8-12 yearsSkills to master
- Deep expertise in process design, automation, and industrial engineering. You'd be the one designing the optimal production lines and processes, often for new products or new facilities. This path would then broaden into operations leadership.
You're ready to move on when
- Designed and implemented new production lines or significant process improvements.
- Strong technical understanding of manufacturing equipment and automation.
- Proven ability to optimise processes for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Experience with CapEx planning and execution for technical projects.
