2AI and this work

Will AI change your work as an Inventory Analyst?

Nobody can say exactly how. Here is what this job is being asked for next, and where to start.

The new skills this role is being asked for

  • Basic Data Storytelling
  • AI Literacy for Operations
Why each one is rising

The future skills this job leans on

We'll only ever tell you what we can actually back up. No hype, no scare tactics.

What happens when you start

Next, a free account. We build your Inventory Analyst plan as you set up, starting with the free Data Fluency module. No card.

Your first Future Fluency module is free. After that, your AI tutor is £70 a month.

3What this role really is

An inventory analyst checks stock records against actual numbers and keeps data accurate day to day. It is a starting point for working in global inventory. The job involves working with data to track how products move and flow.

4What you'd actually use

The tools this job runs on, and how well you'd need to know each one.

You'll be using VLOOKUP/INDEX-MATCH, PivotTables, and complex formulas to analyse data, clean spreadsheets, and create basic trackers. Honestly, Excel is your bread and butter here.

SAP S/4HANA (MM/IM Modules) Basic

Executing transactions like goods receipts and issues, running standard inventory reports (e.g., MB5B), and navigating material master data screens. You'll learn the essential clicks and codes.

Kinaxis RapidResponse (or similar Demand Planning Software) Intermediate

Managing data inputs, running existing forecast models, and making basic statistical overrides based on guidance from your supervisor. You'll be feeding the system and seeing its outputs.

Using pre-built dashboards to track key performance indicators (KPIs) and connecting to clean data sources to build simple visualisations like bar charts or line graphs for ad-hoc requests.

SQL (Structured Query Language) Basic

Running pre-written queries to extract specific data sets from our databases. You won't be writing complex queries from scratch just yet, but you'll understand how to get the data you need using existing scripts.

5What you get to decide, and how that grows

Power in a job isn't your title. It's what you're allowed to decide. Here's how it grows as you move up.

The choiceComing in Where you are nowThe step above
Daily Task Prioritisation Follow supervisor's guidance; escalate conflicts. Prioritise routine tasks independently; consult on new requests. Independently prioritise workstreams; align with manager on critical path.
Inventory Adjustments (e.g., write-offs, quantity changes) Identify discrepancies and report to supervisor; no independent action. Propose adjustments for routine issues (e.g., minor cycle count variances <£500); require supervisor approval. Approve adjustments up to £5,000; larger amounts require Inventory Manager approval.
Process Improvement Suggestions Suggest ideas to supervisor. Develop and propose minor process improvements within own scope; require supervisor approval. Design and implement process improvements for a workstream; consult Inventory Manager.

6How you'll be judged

The scoreboard, and what is not on it. The hard targets, how often each is actually looked at, and the quiet signals that never reach a dashboard.

Inventory Record Accuracy (IRA)
How accurately our system reflects the physical stock in the warehouse.
Target · > 99.5% on cycle counts for assigned categories

If you're responsible for 500 SKUs, and only 2 are off by more than 1 unit during a cycle count, you're hitting the target. We're talking about catching those small discrepancies before they become big problems.

Forecast Accuracy (WAPE/MAPE)
The accuracy of baseline forecasts for your assigned product categories.
Target · > 85% at the SKU-location level

If the system predicts we'll sell 100 units of Product X in London next month, and we actually sell 88, that's an 88% accuracy. You'll be tracking these numbers and flagging big variances.

On-Time Report Delivery
Ensuring routine inventory reports are completed and distributed by their deadlines.
Target · 100% of daily/weekly reports delivered on time

The 'Daily Stock Movement' report needs to be out by 9 AM every morning. If it's consistently there, you're doing well. Simple, but critical for the warehouse team.

Proactive Problem Identification
Spotting potential issues in inventory data or processes before they escalate.
  • You flag unusual stock movements to your supervisor, ask about discrepancies you notice, or point out a data entry error before it causes a wider problem. It's about not just doing the task, but thinking about what the numbers mean.
Quality of Documentation & Data Entry
How clear and accurate your notes, data inputs, and process documentation are.
  • Your colleagues can easily understand your notes on a stock adjustment. Data you enter is consistently correct, without typos or formatting errors. When you update a process, it's easy for someone else to follow.
Learning Agility
How quickly you pick up new systems, processes, and inventory concepts.
  • You ask thoughtful questions, apply feedback quickly, and can independently complete new tasks after a couple of tries. You're not making the same mistakes repeatedly and show a genuine curiosity to understand 'why' things are done a certain way.

7Would you like it

Both sides. What people enjoy, and what grinds them down.

What people enjoy
Learning & Development

You're always asking questions, taking notes, and looking for opportunities to understand new systems or concepts. You'll volunteer for tasks that stretch your knowledge, even if they're a bit challenging.

After running a report, you might ask your supervisor, 'How is this data actually used by the planning team?' or 'Could you show me how to pull this specific query next time?'

Making a Tangible Contribution

You get satisfaction from seeing your accurate data directly support a smooth warehouse operation or a correct stock count. You like knowing your work has a real, immediate impact, even if it's behind the scenes.

You feel good when a warehouse manager thanks you for quickly resolving a stock discrepancy, knowing your quick action prevented a delay in shipping.

Problem Solving (within defined parameters)

You enjoy the challenge of investigating why a number looks off or tracing a missing shipment. You like piecing together information to figure out what happened, even if the final resolution comes from someone else.

You spend an hour digging through transaction logs to understand why a quantity was negative, and you present your findings clearly to your supervisor.

What frustrates people
  • Spending ages cleaning data that should have been correct in the first place.
  • Having to follow strict processes without understanding the 'why' immediately.
  • Feeling like your direct impact is limited to small, specific tasks.
  • Dealing with urgent requests that turn out not to be that urgent after all.
What this role does not give you
  • High-level strategic decision-making authority.
  • Constant novelty or a completely unpredictable day-to-day.
  • Direct management of people or large budgets.
  • Immediate visibility to senior leadership.

8Who you work with

Your work ensures that the data our planning and warehouse teams rely on is accurate. Get it right, and our products move efficiently; get it wrong, and we face delays, stock discrepancies, and potentially unhappy customers. You're the backbone of data integrity for our physical stock.

Inside the business
  • Inventory Supervisor and other Inventory Analysts
  • Warehouse Operations teams (picking, packing, receiving)
  • Procurement team (for order tracking)
  • Customer Service (for stock availability queries)
Outside the business
  • None directly, maybe some basic data interaction with 3PL (third-party logistics) providers under supervision

9What you need before you start

Not a wish list. The things you would be expected to already have.

  • Strong numerical aptitude and comfort working with large datasets.
  • A logical and methodical approach to problem-solving.
  • Excellent organisational skills, able to manage multiple small tasks and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel (we'll test this).
  • A genuine desire to learn about supply chain and inventory management.
  • The ability to communicate clearly, both written and verbally, with colleagues at all levels.

10What to practise next

Where the job is going, and what to do about it starting this week.

Advanced ERP Navigation & Troubleshooting

You'll need to go beyond basic transactions. Being able to dig deeper into SAP to understand transaction flows, identify root causes of errors, and pull specific data without constant supervision will be crucial for efficiency and problem-solving.

Transaction Flow Analysis · Error Code Interpretation · Custom Report Design (Basic)

  • This quarter: Ask your supervisor to walk you through a few common SAP error scenarios and how they're resolved.
  • Next quarter: Volunteer to help with any SAP-related data cleansing projects.
  • Month 3-6: Try to find the answers to simple SAP queries yourself before asking for help.
  • Ongoing: Document any new SAP transactions or reports you learn how to use.

Quick win: Take ownership of one specific, recurring SAP data issue and learn how to resolve it end-to-end (with supervision, of course).

Intermediate SQL for Data Extraction

Relying solely on pre-written queries can be limiting. As you progress, you'll need to write your own basic SQL queries to pull specific data sets for ad-hoc analysis, without waiting for someone else. This gives you more autonomy and speed.

SELECT, FROM, WHERE clauses · JOINs (INNER, LEFT) · GROUP BY & Aggregate Functions

  • This month: Complete a free online SQL tutorial (e.g., Codecademy, SQLZoo) focusing on SELECT, FROM, WHERE.
  • Next quarter: Ask your supervisor for access to a sandbox database (if available) to practice writing queries.
  • Month 3-6: Try to re-write one of the simpler pre-existing queries yourself.
  • Ongoing: Whenever you need specific data, think about how you'd write the SQL query for it.

Quick win: Start by modifying existing queries slightly to pull different date ranges or product categories. Small steps build confidence.

11Staying current once you are in

What people here do to keep up
  • Internal training programmes on our ERP and planning systems.
  • Shadowing experienced Inventory Analysts and Supervisors to learn best practices.
  • Participating in cross-functional meetings (e.g., with Warehouse Operations) to understand different perspectives.
  • Taking online courses on data analysis, basic SQL, or supply chain fundamentals (we can recommend some!).

Basic Data Storytelling

It's not enough to just pull numbers; you'll need to explain what they mean. Your supervisor and other teams want quick, clear insights, not just raw data. This skill helps you turn 'here are the figures' into 'here's what the figures tell us'.

  • Audience Awareness
  • Key Message Identification

16Pay and demand

Pay & demand

The figure is the median for full-time employees in the ONS occupation this job title codes to (Stock control clerks and assistants), from the April 2025 survey, about six months old when published, as ASHE always is. It is that occupation's middle, not this role's. Half earn more.

The ten Future Fluencies

The credential is what you can do today. These are what keep you valuable.

A qualification proves you can do the job as it's defined today. These ten are what decide whether you're still the obvious person for it in five years. They're the capabilities employers are now writing into senior roles faster than people are learning them. Zavmo weaves them through whatever you study, so you come out with both: the credential and the fluency.

The highlighted ones are the Fluencies your role leans on hardest, from how Inventory Analyst is actually changing.

Where it leads

The career path, and where it branches

Inventory Analyst is a start, not a ceiling. Each step below asks for new skills and hands back more autonomy.

  1. Senior Inventory Analyst (Level 2)

    2-3 years in current role

You'll move from executing specific tasks to owning a product category or a regional segment of our inventory. You'll investigate exceptions more independently and start to recommend actions, rather than just reporting issues. It's about taking more ownership.

    • Advanced Demand Planning Software Usage Building new forecast models, running 'what-if' scenarios.
    • Intermediate SQL Writing more complex queries with JOINs and GROUP BY.
    • Basic Inventory Optimisation Techniques Applying ABC/XYZ analysis or basic safety stock calculations.
Working with AI on the job

Working with AI

Where AI is starting to help

Let's be real, a lot of inventory work involves digging through data and running reports. Imagine if you could cut down on those repetitive tasks, freeing you up to actually understand what the numbers mean and learn more. That's where AI comes in.

We're building out our AI capabilities to help our Operations team work smarter, not harder. As an Inventory Analyst, you'll be using these tools to make your day-to-day work smoother, faster, and more accurate. Think of AI as your super-powered assistant, not a replacement.

Baseline Forecast Automation

Our AI models will automatically generate the initial baseline forecast for thousands of SKUs. Your job shifts from building these from scratch to reviewing the AI's output, flagging anything that looks odd, and understanding the 'why' behind its predictions. It means less number crunching for you, and more critical thinking.

Demand Anomaly Detection

Instead of manually scanning sales data for unusual spikes or drops, AI will do it for you. It'll instantly alert you to significant deviations from the forecast, like a sudden surge in demand for a product. You'll get a heads-up much faster, allowing you to investigate and escalate potential issues before they become big problems.

S&OP Narrative Drafting

For our monthly Sales & Operations Planning meetings, AI can draft the initial summary of key inventory changes. It translates complex data points into plain English, giving you a starting point for your reports. You'll spend less time writing and more time refining the story, ensuring it's clear and accurate for your supervisor.

Data Query Assistant

Got a quick question about stock levels or historical movements? Instead of writing complex SQL or digging through multiple reports, you'll be able to ask a natural language AI assistant. It'll pull the data you need, helping you get answers faster and learn how to navigate our systems more effectively.
