The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Progression from Building Services Coordinator (L2)

- Taking full ownership of a site, proactive vendor management, basic project coordination, and a solid understanding of all core building systems.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeds expectations on work order resolution and PPM completion.
- Successfully managed one or two small office re-stacks or system upgrades.
- Demonstrates initiative in identifying and resolving issues before escalation.
- Receives positive feedback from site leaders and vendors for reliability and communication.
- 2
Lateral move from another Operations role (e.g., Logistics, Workplace Experience)
5-8 years relevant experienceSkills to master
- Strong project management, vendor management, and operational process design skills, with a keen interest in the physical built environment. You'd need to quickly get up to speed on building systems and EHS compliance.

- Proven track record of managing complex operational processes and projects.
- Experience with external vendor or supplier relationship management.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new technical domains quickly and apply them.
- A clear interest and some foundational knowledge in facilities or building services.
- 3
Coming from a Trade Background with Management Experience
8+ years trade experience + 2-3 years supervisorySkills to master
- Deep technical knowledge of one or more building trades (e.g., electrical, HVAC, plumbing) combined with experience managing teams or projects. You'd need to develop strong administrative, vendor management, and EHS compliance skills for a corporate setting.
You're ready to move on when
- Expert-level technical understanding of building systems.
- Experience leading a team of technicians or managing contractors on site.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organise, and oversee complex technical work.
- A desire to move into a broader coordination and management role, rather than purely hands-on technical work.
