How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

From Assembly Line Manager (L2)
2-3 years at L2Skills to master
- Mastering full ownership of a single line's SQDC (Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost), leading small improvement projects, and effectively managing a team of operators. You'll need to show you can consistently hit targets and handle the daily pressures.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeding OEE and FPY targets for your line.
- Successfully led at least 3-5 small to medium-sized continuous improvement projects (e.g., Kaizen events, 5S implementations).
- Demonstrated ability to mentor junior operators or new team members effectively.
- Proactive identification and resolution of recurring issues, not just reactive firefighting.
- Positive feedback from your Operations Manager and peers on your leadership and problem-solving skills.

From Production Team Lead (L1) (Accelerated)
3-5 years at L1, often with a formal development programmeSkills to master
- Excelling in supervising a small cell of operators, ensuring hourly targets are met, and demonstrating exceptional potential for leadership and problem-solving. This path usually involves taking on additional responsibilities and formal leadership training.
You're ready to move on when
- Outstanding performance reviews and identified as a 'high potential' individual.
- Successfully covered for an Assembly Line Manager during absences, demonstrating capability.
- Completed formal leadership or Lean training programmes.
- Proactively taken on responsibilities beyond your core role, such as leading small safety initiatives or training new hires.
- Strong recommendation from your Assembly Line Manager and Operations Manager.

From Manufacturing Engineer (with Operations focus)
5-7 years as an Engineer, with a desire to move into direct operations managementSkills to master
- Deep technical understanding of manufacturing processes, excellent problem-solving skills, and experience implementing process improvements. You'll need to develop strong people management and leadership skills, as well as a more hands-on, day-to-day operational mindset.
You're ready to move on when
- Led significant process improvement or new product introduction projects on the factory floor.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with production teams and understand operational challenges.
- Expressed a clear desire and aptitude for people management and direct operational responsibility.
- Taken initiative to learn about Lean manufacturing and operational metrics beyond engineering design.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to influence without direct authority.
