The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Sponsorship Activation Specialist (L2)
2-3 years as a SpecialistSkills to master
- To step up from Specialist, you'd need to have consistently owned and successfully delivered multiple Tier-3 and some Tier-2 sponsorships. You'd have built strong relationships with those partners, demonstrated proactive problem-solving, and started to informally mentor new joiners. It's about proving you can handle the complexity and the client relationship independently.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering projects on time and on budget with minimal oversight.
- Receiving unsolicited positive feedback from sponsors and internal teams.
- Proactively identifying and solving problems before they escalate.
- Taking initiative to train or support less experienced team members.
- Demonstrating a strong understanding of contractual obligations and risk management.
- 2
From Experiential Marketing Manager
5-7 years in experiential marketingSkills to master
- If you're coming from a pure experiential background, you'd need to show you understand the commercial side of sponsorships – particularly contractual fulfilment, ROI measurement, and how to manage multiple brand stakeholders. Your event execution skills would be top-notch, but you'd need to layer on the partnership management savvy.
You're ready to move on when
- Experience managing significant event budgets and external vendors.
- A portfolio of successful, impactful experiential campaigns.
- Ability to articulate the commercial objectives behind activations.
- Strong project management and on-site leadership skills.
- Understanding of brand guidelines and approval processes.
- 3
From Brand Manager (with partnership focus)
4-6 years as a Brand ManagerSkills to master
- A Brand Manager who's had a strong focus on partnerships or co-marketing initiatives could transition well. You'd already understand brand strategy and marketing objectives, but you'd need to pick up the detailed operational execution of sponsorship contracts, the nuances of 'make-goods', and the specific tools we use for activation management.
You're ready to move on when
- Demonstrable experience managing brand campaigns with external partners.
- Strong understanding of brand guidelines and marketing strategy.
- Proven ability to work with creative agencies and internal teams.
- A keen eye for detail in marketing collateral and campaign execution.
- An eagerness to dive into the operational complexities of sponsorship delivery.
