The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Country Manager (Large Market)
3-5 years in roleSkills to master
- Full P&L ownership for a significant single country, managing a large in-country team, navigating local regulatory environments, and delivering consistent growth.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeding country P&L targets by 10% or more.
- Successfully launching a major new product or service in your market.
- Developing and promoting at least two senior leaders from your country team.
- Being recognised as a 'go-to' leader for complex local challenges.
- 2
VP / Director, Sub-Region (e.g., Southern Europe)
4-6 years in roleSkills to master
- Managing a portfolio of 3-5 countries, driving synergies across markets, balancing diverse country needs with sub-regional strategy, and developing a cluster of Country Managers.
You're ready to move on when
- Achieving portfolio health targets (e.g., 90% of countries hitting revenue goals).
- Realising significant cost synergies or best-practice sharing across your sub-region.
- Successfully integrating a new country or acquisition into your cluster.
- Building strong relationships with global functional heads on behalf of your sub-region.
- 3
Global Head of a Major Function (e.g., Global Head of Sales Operations)
5-7 years in roleSkills to master
- Leading a global functional team, driving standardisation and efficiency across all regions, influencing regional leaders to adopt global programmes, and managing a large budget.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully implementing a global process or system that significantly improved efficiency or effectiveness.
- Demonstrating strong influencing skills across all regions, despite not having direct P&L accountability.
- Building a reputation for strategic thinking and operational excellence at a global level.
