The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Global HR Administrator (L2)
2-3 years at L2Skills to master
- You'd need to have truly mastered end-to-end process ownership, become a go-to person for routine complex queries, and shown a proactive attitude towards identifying and solving problems, not just executing tasks. Basically, you've outgrown the 'mid-level' role.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently resolving Tier 2 queries without escalation.
- Proactively identifying minor process improvements and proposing solutions.
- Informally guiding new joiners or less experienced team members.
- Demonstrating high accuracy and reliability on all tasks, especially data-sensitive ones.
- 2
HRIS Analyst (Mid-Level) from a smaller organisation
3-5 years in HRISSkills to master
- You'd bring strong technical skills with an HRIS (like Workday) and a deep understanding of data structures and reporting. You'd need to quickly get up to speed on our specific global processes and compliance requirements, but your system expertise would be a huge asset.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven experience configuring HRIS modules and building custom reports.
- Strong understanding of HR data architecture and integrations.
- Ability to quickly learn new global compliance rules and apply them to system processes.
- 3
HR Generalist with strong Operations focus
4-6 years as an HR GeneralistSkills to master
- You'd have a broad understanding of HR, but you'd need to demonstrate a real passion for the operational, process-driven side of things. You'd need to show strong analytical skills and a willingness to dive deep into system configuration and data management, moving away from purely employee relations or talent management.
You're ready to move on when
- Track record of improving HR administrative processes in previous roles.
- Strong analytical skills and comfort working with large datasets.
- A clear desire to specialise in HR operations and systems.
