The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

- You'd need to master handling a wide range of complex claims independently, consistently achieving strong settlement outcomes, and demonstrating a natural aptitude for mentoring junior colleagues. Taking on informal leadership roles, like leading team 'roundtables', would be crucial.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeds performance targets on complex claims, especially reserve accuracy and subrogation.
- Frequently sought out by peers for technical advice and guidance.
- Proactively identifies and resolves complex issues before they escalate.
- Demonstrates strong negotiation skills in high-stakes situations.
- Takes initiative to improve team processes or share knowledge.
- 2

8-10 years as an external claims adjuster (especially those handling complex commercial or injury claims)Skills to master
- You'd need to show deep expertise in field investigations, damage assessment, and liability determination across various claim types. Crucially, you'd need to adapt to our internal systems and processes quickly and demonstrate strong internal stakeholder management capabilities.
You're ready to move on when
- Has managed a diverse portfolio of complex claims, often involving site visits and expert coordination.
- Strong track record of independent decision-making and problem-solving.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for external and internal reporting.
- A clear understanding of the 'insurer's perspective' on claims, beyond just the field work.
- Ability to quickly learn and navigate new claims management systems.
