The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Mid-Level Auditor (Internal)
2-3 years as an Auditor (Level 002)Skills to master
- You'd need to have consistently delivered high-quality audit work, taken ownership of specific control areas, and shown early signs of leadership potential, perhaps by informally guiding new joiners. Mastering our internal audit methodology is key.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently completing assigned audit tasks on time and with minimal review comments.
- Proactively identifying and proposing solutions to routine audit issues.
- Demonstrating strong understanding of COSO and SOX principles in practice.
- Volunteering for more complex testing areas or challenging stakeholders.
- 2
External Audit (Big 4 or Mid-Tier Firm)
3-5 years post-qualification (e.g., ACA, ACCA)Skills to master
- You'd bring a strong foundational knowledge of financial statement audits, risk assessment, and control testing from a public accounting background. Adapting to an internal audit perspective (more focus on operational efficiency, less on financial statement opinion) would be important.
You're ready to move on when
- Experience leading audit teams for specific clients or audit cycles.
- Strong client-facing communication and negotiation skills.
- Deep technical accounting knowledge and understanding of audit standards.
- Ability to adapt quickly to new client environments and industries.
- 3
Financial Controls/Compliance Analyst
4-6 years in a dedicated controls or compliance roleSkills to master
- You'd have deep subject matter expertise in a specific area of financial controls or regulatory compliance. You'd need to learn the 'audit lens' – how to objectively test controls and articulate findings from an independent perspective.
You're ready to move on when
- Expertise in designing, implementing, or monitoring internal controls.
- Strong understanding of specific regulatory requirements (e.g., MiFID II, Basel III).
- Experience in identifying and remediating control deficiencies.
- Ability to translate complex regulations into practical business requirements.
