3What this role really is

We see you

You wonder how AI will change the way you lead your team and serve your customers. There's a quiet hope that it might free you from some of the mundane tasks, giving you more time to focus on the bigger picture.

A branch manager runs a bank branch like a small business, handling sales, budgets, staff and service.

4A day in the life

Not a job advert. A real day, built from what this role actually holds.

08:45
You start the day with a quick team huddle, setting the tone and focus for the day ahead.
11:00
A customer complaint lands on your desk, and you dive into resolving it, turning a potential loss into a loyal client.
14:30
You review the branch's performance metrics, identifying areas for improvement and celebrating small victories with your team.
16:00
You meet with a local business owner to discuss partnership opportunities, strengthening community ties.

5What you'd actually use

The tools this job runs on, and how well you'd need to know each one.

Temenos T24 (Core Banking Platform) Advanced

You'll be using this daily to oversee customer accounts, approve transactions, troubleshoot complex issues, and pull custom reports on branch activity. You'll also be training new users on its functionality.

Salesforce Financial Services Cloud (CRM Platform) Advanced

You'll use this to manage your branch's customer pipeline, track sales activities, ensure data integrity, and build custom dashboards to monitor team performance and customer relationships. It's your central hub for customer intelligence.

nCino / Blend (Loan Origination System - LOS) Advanced

You'll be deeply involved in the loan origination workflow, troubleshooting system issues, analysing pipeline conversion rates, and ensuring smooth processing of loan applications from your branch.

Power BI / Tableau (BI & Analytics) Advanced

You'll be building custom reports and dashboards to answer specific business questions about your branch's performance, connecting data from various sources to gain insights and present them to your Area Manager.

Anaplan / Workday Adaptive Planning (Financial Planning & Analysis) Advanced

You'll be developing detailed P&L forecasts for your branch, running scenario analyses for different market conditions, and preparing budget proposals to submit to your Area Manager. This is where you manage your branch's financial future.

6What you get to decide, and how that grows

Power in a job isn't your title. It's what you're allowed to decide. Here's how it grows as you move up.

The choiceComing in Where you are nowThe step above
Loan Approval (Personal/Small Business) Escalate to Assistant Branch Manager or Branch Manager for review and approval. Approve routine personal loans up to £10K. Escalate anything above that or with complex risk factors. Approve personal loans up to £50K and small business loans up to £100K. Consult Area Manager for exceptions or larger amounts.
Branch Staffing & Scheduling Follow pre-set schedules; request changes from Assistant Branch Manager. Manage daily staff rota, approve holiday requests, escalate staffing shortages to Branch Manager. Full authority for daily/weekly staff scheduling, approving leave, and managing overtime within budget. Consult HR and Area Manager for new hires or terminations.
Local Marketing Initiatives Support existing campaigns; suggest ideas to Assistant Branch Manager. Implement local marketing materials provided by head office; propose minor local events to Branch Manager. Design and execute local marketing campaigns within a defined budget (e.g., £5K-£10K), aligning with regional strategy. Consult Marketing team for brand consistency.
Customer Complaint Resolution Resolve basic issues (e.g., transaction errors); escalate complex or irate customers. Handle most escalated customer complaints, offering compensation up to a set limit (e.g., £100). Escalate legal or reputational risks. Full authority to resolve complex customer complaints, including offering significant compensation (e.g., up to £500) or making policy exceptions, within bank guidelines. Escalate only high-risk legal or reputational issues to Area Manager.
Branch Budget Management (Controllable Expenses) Track personal expenses; report discrepancies. Monitor department-level expenses; flag overspends to Branch Manager. Manage and approve all controllable branch expenses within the allocated budget (e.g., up to £5K for ad-hoc purchases). Any significant budget deviations require Area Manager approval.

7How you'll be judged

The scoreboard, and what is not on it. The hard targets, how often each is actually looked at, and the quiet signals that never reach a dashboard.

Branch Deposit Growth
The year-on-year increase in total customer deposits held within your branch.
Target · >5% year-on-year

If your branch had £10M in deposits last year, we'd expect you to be at £10.5M or more this year. You'll get a breakdown showing how much of that is from new customers versus existing ones.

Loan Portfolio Growth
The year-on-year increase in the total value of loans (mortgages, personal loans, business loans) originated or managed by your branch.
Target · >8% year-on-year

If your branch's loan book was £5M last year, we'd want to see it grow to at least £5.4M. This includes both new loans you've brought in and existing ones that you've helped retain.

Controllable Expense Variance
How well you manage the costs that are directly under your control within the branch budget (e.g., staffing, supplies, local marketing).
Target · <2% variance to budget

If your monthly budget for operational expenses is £20,000, you shouldn't be spending more than £20,400 without a really good reason and prior approval. We expect you to be careful with the bank's money.

Branch Employee Turnover
The percentage of your branch staff who leave the bank within a given period. High turnover is expensive and disruptive.
Target · <15% annually

If you have 10 staff members, we'd prefer to see no more than one or two leave in a year. Keeping good people is crucial, and it's a reflection of your leadership.

Customer Satisfaction (NPS)
The Net Promoter Score (NPS) for your branch, based on customer surveys asking how likely they are to recommend us.
Target · >50

If your NPS is consistently above 50, it tells us customers are generally happy with the service they're getting. Below that, we'll be looking at what's going wrong and how to fix it.

Team Engagement & Development
How effectively you motivate, coach, and develop your team members, ensuring they feel valued and have opportunities to grow.
  • Evidence: High scores in internal employee surveys, specific examples of staff promotions or successful internal transfers, positive feedback from your Area Manager on your coaching style, and a generally positive atmosphere in the branch.
Risk & Compliance Culture
Ensuring your branch operates with a strong awareness of regulatory requirements and internal policies, minimising operational errors and compliance breaches.
  • Evidence: Clean internal audit reports, zero (or very few) compliance incidents, proactive identification and reporting of potential risks, and your team consistently completing mandatory training on time. We need to trust you're running a tight ship.
Community & Local Market Integration
How well your branch integrates into the local community, building relationships with local businesses and customers beyond just transactions.
  • Evidence: Active participation in local business associations, successful local marketing initiatives, positive feedback from community leaders, and a clear understanding of your local market's unique needs and competitive landscape. We want you to be a local presence, not just a building.
Problem Solving & Escalation Management
Your ability to resolve complex customer issues or operational challenges efficiently, knowing when to handle things yourself and when to bring in senior support.
  • Evidence: Fewer customer complaints escalated to head office, quick resolution of internal operational glitches, clear and concise summaries when you do need to escalate, and a calm, collected approach when things get a bit chaotic. You're the first line of defence.

8Would you like it

Both sides. What people enjoy, and what grinds them down.

What people enjoy
Building and Leading a High-Performing Team

You get a real buzz from coaching your Personal Bankers to close more loans or seeing a new Teller confidently handle a complex transaction. You're constantly thinking about how to develop your staff, celebrate their successes, and create a positive, productive atmosphere in the branch.

You'll spend time doing one-on-one coaching sessions, running morning huddles to energise the team, and actively looking for opportunities to promote from within your branch.

Making a Tangible Local Impact

You love being the 'go-to' person for financial advice in your community. Helping a local business owner secure a loan to expand or guiding a family through their first mortgage application genuinely excites you. You enjoy seeing the direct results of your branch's work in the local economy.

This means actively participating in local Chamber of Commerce meetings, sponsoring community events, and making sure your branch is known as a friendly, helpful place for local residents and businesses.

Achieving Clear Financial Targets

You're driven by seeing the numbers improve. Hitting your deposit growth, loan targets, and managing your P&L efficiently gives you a real sense of accomplishment. You enjoy the challenge of optimising operations and finding new ways to grow the business.

You'll be deep-diving into your daily sales reports, looking for trends, identifying underperforming areas, and quickly implementing strategies to get back on track. The weekly P&L review isn't a chore; it's your scorecard.

What frustrates people
  • The Legacy Core: Being unable to launch a competitive digital product because the 25-year-old core banking system can't support the required APIs. You'll hear about it from customers.
  • Channel Conflict: Being tasked with driving mobile banking adoption while simultaneously being held accountable for declining foot traffic and transaction volumes in expensive physical branches. It's a tricky balance.
  • Compliance Creep: The endless cycle of new regulations adding hours of administrative work and mandatory training, often without any increase in headcount or budget. Yes, it's tedious but absolutely necessary.
  • Corporate vs. Reality: Trying to motivate your team to hit aggressive sales targets set by a corporate office that seem completely disconnected from the economic realities of your local market. You'll be the one translating.
  • Morale Management: Keeping front-line staff, who are often underpaid and face difficult customers, motivated and engaged in an environment of high pressure and constant change. It's a constant effort.
What this role does not give you
  • Complete autonomy over strategic direction – you're executing a regional strategy, not defining the bank's overall vision.
  • A quiet, predictable work environment – expect daily surprises, urgent requests, and a lot of interaction.
  • A role purely focused on individual contribution – your success is entirely dependent on your team's performance.
  • Minimal administrative burden – there's a fair bit of paperwork, reporting, and compliance checks involved.

9Who you work with

You're directly responsible for the profitability and reputation of your branch. Your decisions influence local market share, customer loyalty, and the overall health of our retail portfolio. Get it right, and you're a key driver of growth; get it wrong, and it impacts our bottom line and brand trust in the community.

Inside the business
  • Area Manager (your direct boss, who you'll report to weekly)
  • Regional Operations (for branch logistics and efficiency)
  • Marketing Team (for local campaigns and promotions)
  • Credit Risk (when you need to discuss loan applications or exceptions)
  • Human Resources (for recruitment, performance, and staff issues)
  • Compliance & Legal (for regulatory guidance and audits)
Outside the business
  • Retail Banking Customers (from individuals to small businesses)
  • Local Business Community (potential clients and partners)
  • Community Organisations (for local engagement and sponsorship)
  • Local Regulators (during audits or investigations)

10What you need before you start

Not a wish list. The things you would be expected to already have.

  • Proven experience (at least 2-3 years) as an Assistant Branch Manager or a Senior Personal Banker, demonstrating strong leadership potential and a solid understanding of retail banking operations.
  • A track record of successfully managing a small team, including coaching, performance reviews, and conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrable experience in achieving sales targets and driving customer satisfaction in a banking environment.
  • A clear understanding of basic financial statements (P&L, balance sheet) and how they apply to a branch setting.
  • Solid knowledge of core banking products (deposits, loans, credit cards) and the associated sales processes.

11What to practise next

Where the job is going, and what to do about it starting this week.

Advanced BI & Predictive Analytics

Moving beyond basic dashboards, you'll need to use tools like Power BI or Tableau to build more sophisticated models that predict customer behaviour, forecast demand for services, and identify emerging market trends. This helps you proactively manage your branch and seize opportunities.

Quick win: Start experimenting with custom calculations and advanced filters in your existing Power BI dashboards to uncover deeper insights.

Integrated Financial Planning & Forecasting

Your role in financial planning will become more integrated with the wider regional and bank-level strategy. You'll need to use tools like Anaplan or Workday Adaptive Planning to not just report on your branch's P&L, but to contribute to more complex, multi-scenario forecasts and understand their impact on the broader organisation.

Driver-based planning models · Rolling forecasts vs. static budgets · Sensitivity analysis for key financial variables · Integration of operational data into financial mod · Understanding the impact of interest rate changes

  • This week: Familiarise yourself with the regional financial planning cycles and inputs.
  • This month: Take an online course on advanced features of Anaplan/Workday Adaptive Planning.
  • Month 2: Propose a new driver for your branch's P&L forecast that wasn't previously considered.
  • Month 3: Collaborate with a peer to build a joint forecast for a specific product line across both branches.

Quick win: When preparing your next branch forecast, add a 'best case' and 'worst case' scenario to your main projection. It shows deeper thinking.

12Staying current once you are in

What people here do to keep up
  • Regularly attend industry webinars and conferences focused on retail banking trends, digital transformation, and leadership.
  • Participate in internal bank leadership development programmes and mentorship schemes.
  • Join local business networks (e.g., Chamber of Commerce) to build community connections and market knowledge.

The ten Future Fluencies

The credential is what you can do today. These are what keep you valuable.

A qualification proves you can do the job as it's defined today. These ten are what decide whether you're still the obvious person for it in five years. Working with AI on the job

Working with AI

Where AI is starting to help

Let's be honest, running a branch means a mountain of admin, reports, and trying to keep up with customer needs. Imagine cutting down on that busywork. Our new AI Hub is here to do just that, giving you back precious time to focus on what really matters: your team and your customers.

We're not talking about replacing you; we're talking about giving you a seriously smart assistant. For a Branch Manager, AI can take the grunt work out of compliance checks, help you tailor customer offers, keep an eye on the competition, and even draft your team's performance reviews. It's about working smarter, not harder, and making your day-to-day a lot smoother.

Automated Compliance Monitoring

AI tools will continuously scan your branch's transaction data to flag suspicious patterns for AML review, pre-populating Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs). This means your team spends less time sifting through false positives and more time on actual high-risk investigations. Think of it as an extra pair of super-fast, super-accurate eyes on your compliance. You'll spend less time worrying about regulatory breaches.

Hyper-Personalised Customer Offers

Imagine AI analysing a customer's entire banking relationship—their transactions, life events, digital behaviour—and then instantly suggesting the 'next best offer' for them. This could be a tailored loan, a new savings product, or a credit card. Your Personal Bankers get instant, data-backed talking points for client conversations, boosting cross-selling and wallet share without hours of manual research. It's like having a marketing expert for every customer interaction.

Real-Time Competitive Intelligence

An AI agent can constantly monitor competitor websites, news releases, and social media for rate changes, new product launches, and even service complaints in your local area. You'll get a synthesised daily briefing, giving you a real edge in understanding the market and reacting quickly. No more manual market research; the insights come straight to you, ready for action.

Performance & Coaching Co-Pilot

This AI tool analyses your branch's KPI data—sales, service levels, operational efficiency—and generates a first draft of quarterly performance reviews for your direct reports. It highlights trends, identifies areas for improvement, and even suggests specific coaching questions. This could save you hours of prep time per direct report, letting you focus on the actual coaching conversation rather than just the paperwork.
