- Leading complex features end-to-end, mentoring 1-2 junior engineers, making significant technical design decisions within a workstream, and effectively communicating technical trade-offs to product managers.
You're ready to move on when
- You're consistently taking ownership of entire workstreams, not just tasks.
- You're the person others on your team go to for technical guidance and unblocking.
- You've successfully delivered at least one project with significant architectural complexity.
- You've shown a keen interest in team process improvements and broader technical strategy.

Technical Lead (from another company)
Variable, depending on prior company structureSkills to master
- Experience leading a small team (3-5 engineers), defining technical roadmaps for a product area, and managing the full SDLC for critical services. Adaptability to our tech stack and culture is key.

- You have demonstrable experience with direct reports and performance management.
- You've been accountable for the success and failure of significant technical initiatives.
- You can articulate your approach to technical leadership and team development.
- You're comfortable with ambiguity and can quickly get up to speed on new systems.

Architect / Principal Engineer (IC path)
5-8 years as an Architect/PrincipalSkills to master
- Deep expertise in system architecture, cross-functional technical leadership without direct reports, and influencing technical direction at a broader organisational level. This path requires a shift towards people management and team development.

- You're looking to transition from a purely individual contributor role to one with people leadership responsibilities.
- You have a strong desire to mentor and grow engineers directly.
- You understand the difference between technical authority and managerial authority.
