Senior Health & Safety Training Specialist (L3) / Lead H&S Instructional Designer (L4)
5-8 years to L3, then 3-4 years to L4, then 3-4 years to L5Skills to master
- Deep expertise in instructional design, programme management, advanced evaluation (Kirkpatrick L3/4), stakeholder influence, and mentoring junior colleagues. You'll need to have successfully led significant training initiatives.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering complex training programmes on time and to a high standard.
- Demonstrating strong leadership on projects, even without formal authority.
- Proactively identifying and solving systemic training challenges.
- Receiving positive feedback on mentorship and coaching abilities.
- Building strong relationships with senior operational leaders.

EHS Manager with L&D Focus
Roughly 10-15 years in EHS, with a strong emphasis on training responsibilities, then 2-3 years to L5Skills to master
- Comprehensive EHS knowledge, strong understanding of regulatory compliance, experience managing EHS programmes, and a proven ability to develop and deliver H&S training as a core part of their role. You'll need to show a clear passion for the learning and development side.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully implementing EHS training programmes that reduced incident rates.
- Leading EHS teams with a strong focus on competency development.
- Demonstrating strong communication and influence skills with diverse audiences.
- A clear desire to specialise and lead the training function rather than general EHS management.

Learning & Development Manager (from another industry/department)
10-15 years in L&D, then 2-4 years to L5 (requires significant H&S upskilling)Skills to master
- Strong foundational L&D expertise (instructional design, learning tech, evaluation, team leadership), coupled with a demonstrated ability and commitment to rapidly acquire deep H&S domain knowledge and regulatory understanding. This path is less common but possible for exceptional L&D leaders.

- Proven success in leading L&D teams and driving strategic learning initiatives.
- Quickly absorbing complex technical or regulatory information.
- Demonstrating a genuine passion and aptitude for Health & Safety.
- Successfully managing a large budget and diverse stakeholder groups in previous L&D roles.
