How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

From Quality Engineer (L2)
3-5 years as a Quality EngineerSkills to master
- Leading small-to-medium scale CAPAs independently, demonstrating strong statistical analysis skills, taking ownership of specific product lines or processes, and showing initiative in proposing improvements.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently closing CAPAs effectively and on time.
- Successfully leading at least one significant quality improvement project (e.g., a Green Belt project).
- Being the 'go-to' person for technical questions from junior colleagues.
- Proactively identifying and proposing solutions to recurring quality issues.

From Process Engineer (with Quality Focus)
5-7 years in Process EngineeringSkills to master
- Deep understanding of manufacturing processes, strong problem-solving skills, experience with process validation, and a demonstrated interest in quality systems and compliance.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully optimising manufacturing processes to improve yield or reduce defects.
- Experience with process validation and change control.
- A clear understanding of how process parameters impact product quality.
- Taking initiative to learn and apply quality methodologies like SPC or FMEA.

From R&D Engineer (with Quality & Compliance Exposure)
5-7 years in R&DSkills to master
- Strong product design knowledge, understanding of design controls, experience with risk management (e.g., DFMEA), and a solid grasp of regulatory requirements for new product introductions.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully bringing new products from concept to launch, with a focus on quality.
- Experience conducting DFMEAs and design reviews.
- A good understanding of how design choices impact manufacturability and field performance.
- Demonstrating a proactive approach to embedding quality into design.
