3What this role really is

An ESG coordinator collects and checks environmental, social and governance data for company reporting. You track down figures across different systems and make sure they are accurate before they go into the main reports. The work involves learning what ESG means in practice for a business, and how data, compliance and reporting fit together.

4What you'd actually use

The tools this job runs on, and how well you'd need to know each one.

You'll be using Excel constantly for data cleaning, aggregation, basic calculations (sums, averages), and organising information from various sources before it goes into our main platforms. Think VLOOKUPs, PivotTables, and complex formulas.

Workiva ESG / OneTrust ESG & Ethics Intermediate

You'll be accurately inputting collected data into these platforms, managing assigned tasks for data collection campaigns, and running pre-configured reports as needed. This is where a lot of your data lives.

EcoVadis / Sedex Basic

You'll be sending out supplier assessments, tracking their completion rates, and pulling standard performance reports to monitor our supply chain's ESG performance.

MS SharePoint/Teams Intermediate

You'll use these for daily team communication, managing personal tasks, updating project boards, and collaborating on shared documents with the team.

Power BI / Tableau Intermediate

You'll connect to established data sources, build basic dashboards from templates, and manipulate filters and views to help visualise the data you've collected. You won't be building complex dashboards from scratch, but you'll be using them.

5What you get to decide, and how that grows

Power in a job isn't your title. It's what you're allowed to decide. Here's how it grows as you move up.

The choiceComing in Where you are nowThe step above
Data Collection Methodology Follows established procedures and templates. Escalates any proposed changes or ambiguities to Senior ESG Specialist. Proposes minor adjustments to data collection methods for efficiency, with manager approval. Identifies and resolves routine data inconsistencies. Designs and implements new data collection processes for specific workstreams. Makes technical decisions on data quality rules and validation logic.
Reporting Content & Narrative Inputs data into pre-defined templates. Does not draft narrative or interpret data for external use. Flags potential misinterpretations to manager. Drafts initial sections of internal reports based on collected data. Proposes minor narrative adjustments for clarity, subject to review. Develops comprehensive sections of external sustainability reports. Makes recommendations on data presentation and messaging within established guidelines.
Stakeholder Engagement Strategy Communicates with internal stakeholders to request data, following templates and scripts. Escalates any resistance or complex queries to manager. Independently follows up with internal stakeholders to resolve data gaps. Participates in cross-functional meetings to explain data needs. Leads engagement with specific internal stakeholder groups (e.g., Procurement, HR) to improve data quality and collection processes. Represents ESG in relevant internal forums.
Tool & System Usage Uses assigned ESG platforms (e.g., Workiva, EcoVadis) for data input and basic report pulling, under guidance. Reports technical issues. Configures basic dashboards and reports within ESG platforms. Troubleshoots common user issues and provides basic training. Evaluates and recommends new features or modules within existing ESG platforms. Designs complex workflows and custom reports. Acts as a super-user.

6How you'll be judged

The scoreboard, and what is not on it. The hard targets, how often each is actually looked at, and the quiet signals that never reach a dashboard.

Data Accuracy Rate
The percentage of data points you handle that pass internal quality checks and external audits without correction.
Target · >98% accuracy on all managed datasets

You collect 500 data points for our Scope 1 emissions. If only 5 need correction after review, that's a 99% accuracy rate. We're aiming for near-perfection here.

Data Request Completion Timeliness
The percentage of data requests or survey inputs you're responsible for that are submitted by the internal deadline.
Target · 100% of data requests submitted on or before the internal deadline

If the Senior Specialist asks for the Q1 waste data by Friday, we need it by Friday. Missing a deadline for one piece of data can hold up a whole report.

Audit Readiness of Documentation
The number of minor non-conformities or missing pieces of evidence found during internal or external data assurance processes for data you've managed.
Target · <5 minor non-conformities found annually

When the external auditors come knocking, they'll ask for proof for every number. If you've got all your source documents neatly filed and referenced, you're golden. If they can't find something, that's a non-conformity.

ESG Platform Data Input Completion
The percentage of assigned data input tasks into our ESG platforms (e.g., Workiva, OneTrust) that are fully completed and validated.
Target · >95% completion rate for assigned tasks

You're assigned 20 tasks to input supplier assessment data into EcoVadis. Completing 19 of them fully and correctly means you're hitting your target.

Proactive Issue Identification
How well you spot potential data quality issues or inconsistencies before they become bigger problems.
  • You flag an anomaly in the energy consumption data that doesn't quite add up, rather than just inputting it. You notice a missing piece of documentation and ask for it, instead of waiting to be prompted. You bring up potential roadblocks to your manager before they become actual roadblocks.
Learning and Application of ESG Concepts
Your ability to quickly grasp new ESG reporting requirements or methodologies and apply them to your daily tasks.
  • You ask smart questions about why certain data is needed for TCFD. You start to understand the difference between Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions without constant prompting. You can explain simply why 'double materiality' matters for our reporting.
Collaboration and Support
How effectively you work with other team members and internal stakeholders to get the information you need.
  • You build good relationships with the plant managers, making them more likely to respond to your data requests quickly. You offer to help a team member if your own tasks are complete. You're easy to work with and contribute positively to team meetings.

7Would you like it

Both sides. What people enjoy, and what grinds them down.

What people enjoy
Making a Tangible Impact

You'll feel good knowing that the accurate data you've collected is directly feeding into reports that show our progress on climate targets or social initiatives. You're not just pushing paper; you're contributing to real change.

Seeing your numbers appear in the annual sustainability report, knowing you helped get them there, gives you a real sense of accomplishment.

Learning & Development

This role is a fantastic learning ground. You'll be exposed to complex global ESG issues, different reporting frameworks, and a variety of data systems. If you love soaking up new knowledge and skills, you'll thrive.

You'll get to sit in on meetings where senior leaders discuss climate strategy, giving you a front-row seat to how it all works.

Structure & Clarity

While the ESG world is complex, your day-to-day tasks will often involve following clear processes and guidelines. If you appreciate having a defined scope and knowing exactly what's expected, you'll find comfort here.

You'll have clear templates for data collection and reporting, meaning you know exactly what to do and how to do it.

What frustrates people
  • The Data Scavenger Hunt: You'll spend 60% of your time chasing down operational data from various teams who use inconsistent spreadsheets and don't always prioritise your requests.
  • Repetitive Tasks: A good chunk of your day will involve data entry, cleaning, and validation, which can feel a bit monotonous at times.
  • Lack of Immediate Impact: You're supporting the big picture, so you won't always see the direct, immediate results of your individual efforts.
  • The Moving Goalposts: Sometimes, reporting requirements change, meaning you might have to re-do some data collection or formatting.
What this role does not give you
  • Strategic Decision-Making: You won't be setting the ESG strategy or making high-level decisions; that's for more senior folks.
  • Direct External Engagement: You won't be presenting to the board or engaging with investors directly.
  • Constant Novelty: While the field is evolving, many of your daily tasks will be routine and process-driven.
  • Big Budgets or Team Leadership: You'll manage your own tasks, not a team or a large budget.

8Who you work with

Your work ensures the foundational accuracy and completeness of our ESG disclosures. Get it right, and the company maintains its licence to operate, attracts responsible investment, and avoids regulatory penalties. Get it wrong, and the entire ESG programme is built on shaky ground, leading to potential greenwashing accusations or significant financial and reputational risks. Basically, you're making sure the house has a solid foundation before anyone tries to build a roof.

Inside the business
  • Senior ESG Specialist (your direct manager)
  • Operations and Plant Managers (for environmental data)
  • HR Business Partners (for social data like diversity, training)
  • Procurement Team (for supply chain data)
  • Finance Team (for data validation and budget tracking)
Outside the business
  • ESG Ratings Agencies (MSCI, Sustainalytics – though you won't talk to them directly, your data feeds them)
  • External Auditors (who check our numbers)
  • Regulatory Bodies (like the EU for CSRD, though again, you're behind the scenes)

9What you need before you start

Not a wish list. The things you would be expected to already have.

  • Strong numerical aptitude and comfort working with large datasets.
  • Proven ability to maintain high levels of accuracy and attention to detail in previous roles or academic work.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel (advanced level, including VLOOKUPs, PivotTables, complex formulas) or equivalent spreadsheet software.
  • Demonstrable organisational skills, including managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines.
  • A genuine interest in sustainability, environmental issues, social responsibility, or corporate governance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, allowing you to clearly articulate data requests and findings.

10What to practise next

Where the job is going, and what to do about it starting this week.

Advanced Data Modelling in Excel & Power Query

While we're moving towards more robust platforms, Excel isn't going away for quick analysis and data manipulation. The ability to build robust, auditable data models in Excel, especially with Power Query for ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) tasks, will make you incredibly efficient and valuable. It's about making your data work smarter, not harder.

Power Query for Data Transformation · Data Model Design (Star Schema) · DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) Basics · Error Handling & Auditing in Excel

  • This week: Watch a few YouTube tutorials on 'Introduction to Power Query in Excel.'
  • This month: Try to automate one of your weekly data cleaning tasks using Power Query.
  • Month 2: Experiment with building a simple data model in Excel, linking two related datasets.
  • Month 3: Seek out a mentor (perhaps your Senior ESG Specialist) to review your Power Query scripts and data models.

Quick win: Use Power Query to combine two separate spreadsheets you regularly work with into one, automatically removing duplicates and standardising formats.

11Staying current once you are in

What people here do to keep up
  • Attend introductory webinars or online courses on ESG reporting, climate change basics, or corporate governance.
  • Read industry publications and news (e.g., GreenBiz, Environmental Finance) to stay updated on emerging trends.
  • Join relevant professional groups or online communities to network and learn from peers.
  • Seek out internal training opportunities on our specific ESG platforms and data systems.
  • Shadow more experienced team members to understand their processes and challenges.

The ten Future Fluencies

Zavmo analysis

The credential is what you can do today. These are what keep you valuable.

A qualification proves you can do the job as it's defined today. These ten are what decide whether you're still the obvious person for it in five years. They're the capabilities employers are now writing into senior roles faster than people are learning them. Zavmo weaves them through whatever you study, so you come out with both: the credential and the fluency.

The highlighted ones are the Fluencies your role leans on hardest, from how ESG Coordinator is actually changing.

Where it leads next, rung by rung

Where it leads

The career path, and where it branches

ESG Coordinator is a start, not a ceiling. Each step below asks for new skills and hands back more autonomy.

  1. ESG Analyst (Level 002)

2-3 years after starting as Coordinator

You'll move from executing tasks to owning specific data streams and performing initial analysis. You'll start to take more ownership of projects rather than just supporting them.

    • GHG Inventory Management Independently building and maintaining a corporate GHG inventory.
    • Data Visualisation Creating basic dashboards in Power BI/Tableau to present data.
    • Materiality Assessment Support Contributing to the formal process of identifying key ESG topics.
    • Basic Report Drafting Preparing initial drafts of internal and external reports.
Working with AI on the job

Working with AI

Where AI is starting to help

Let's be real, a lot of ESG data work involves repetitive tasks, chasing numbers, and making sure everything lines up. Imagine if you could cut down on that manual grind, freeing you up to focus on the more interesting parts of the job. Well, with AI, you can. We're building an 'AI Productivity Hub' specifically for our Compliance_Quality_Health_Safety team, and as an ESG Coordinator, you'll be one of the first to get your hands on these tools.

In this role, AI isn't about replacing you; it's about making you incredibly efficient. Think of it as having a highly skilled, tireless assistant who can sift through documents, validate data, and even draft initial summaries in seconds. This means less time on the boring stuff and more time for learning, problem-solving, and growing your career in ESG.

Automated Data Extraction & Validation

Use AI-powered tools (like NLP and computer vision) to automatically scan and extract data from unstructured sources such as utility bills, waste manifests, and even scanned safety incident reports. The AI can also flag anomalies and inconsistencies by comparing new data against historical trends. This means less manual copying and pasting, and fewer 'typo' errors.

Smart Data Quality Checks

An AI model can continuously monitor incoming ESG data for unusual spikes, drops, or missing values that a human eye might miss. It'll give you an early warning system for potential data quality issues, helping you catch problems before they make it into a report. You're still the final arbiter, but the AI does the heavy lifting of spotting the weird stuff.

Regulatory & Standard Summarisation

Leverage AI to quickly summarise dense regulatory documents or updates to ESG reporting standards (like new GRI disclosures or ISSB guidance). Instead of wading through hundreds of pages, you'll get the key takeaways and how they might impact our data collection, letting you understand the 'why' quicker.

First-Draft Report Sections

For internal reports or basic sections of external documents, you can feed a generative AI platform your collected data and key points. It'll then generate a coherent first draft of the narrative, saving you hours of staring at a blank page. You'll then refine it, adding your human touch and ensuring accuracy.
