3What this role really is

An ESG analyst checks and reports environmental, social and governance data, making sure it is accurate and traceable.

4What you'd actually use

The tools this job runs on, and how well you'd need to know each one.

Cleaning, sorting, filtering, and performing basic calculations on large datasets. You'll be using VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, and conditional formatting regularly.

ESG Data Management Platform (e.g., Workiva, Sphera, Cority) Intermediate

Entering and validating data from operational sites, running pre-built reports, and flagging missing or anomalous data points within the system.

Power BI / Tableau (Dashboard Refresh) Intermediate

Populating and refreshing existing dashboards with new data, performing basic filtering, and ensuring the visualisations are up-to-date for internal team use.

Microsoft SharePoint / Teams Intermediate

Collaborating on documents, sharing files securely, and participating in team communications and meetings.

Regulatory Intelligence Platforms (e.g., Enhesa, LexisNexis Regulatory Compliance) Basic

Using the platform to look up specific regulations as directed by a senior team member, or setting up basic alerts for keywords.

5What you get to decide, and how that grows

Power in a job isn't your title. It's what you're allowed to decide. Here's how it grows as you move up.

The choiceComing in Where you are nowThe step above
Data Validation & Error Correction Identify potential errors, flag them, and escalate to your supervisor for guidance on correction. Do NOT correct data without explicit instruction. Independently identify and correct routine data errors within established guidelines. Escalate complex or systemic issues. Design and implement new data validation rules and processes. Authorise significant data corrections after review.
Process Improvement Suggestions Suggest minor improvements to your direct supervisor for data collection or entry processes. Propose and, with approval, implement improvements to specific data streams or reporting workflows. Lead initiatives to re-engineer core ESG data processes, including system changes or new tool adoption.
Tool & Software Use Use assigned software and tools as instructed. Report any technical issues to IT or your supervisor. Select appropriate tools for specific analytical tasks within approved software lists. Troubleshoot minor software issues. Evaluate and recommend new software or features for ESG data management and reporting. Influence tech stack decisions.
External Communication No direct external communication on behalf of the company. All external queries or requests must be escalated. May draft responses to basic data requests from external parties for supervisor review. No direct communication without approval. Represent the team in discussions with auditors or external consultants, providing data explanations under guidance.

6How you'll be judged

The scoreboard, and what is not on it. The hard targets, how often each is actually looked at, and the quiet signals that never reach a dashboard.

Data Accuracy Rate
The percentage of data points you've collected and validated that are free from errors when reviewed by a senior team member.
Target · Greater than 99% accuracy on all verified data points.

If you process 500 data points for the quarterly emissions report, we'd expect no more than 5 minor errors found during the specialist's review.

Timeliness of Data Submissions
How often you submit collected and validated data by the internal deadlines set by the ESG team.
Target · 100% of data collection templates and inputs completed by internal deadlines.

All 12 weekly water consumption reports from various sites are entered and flagged as complete by Friday 5 PM, every week.

Query Resolution Time
The speed at which you respond to and resolve basic data queries or requests for clarification from senior team members.
Target · Respond to data validation queries within 24 hours and resolve within 48 hours, in most cases.

A specialist asks about a discrepancy in energy data on Tuesday morning; you investigate, find the source, and provide the correct figure by Wednesday morning.

Adherence to Data Protocols
How well you follow the established procedures and guidelines for data collection, entry, and validation.
  • Your work consistently follows documented processes
  • you don't cut corners. Senior team members rarely need to correct your methodology. You ask clarifying questions when a process isn't clear, rather than guessing.
Proactive Learning & Engagement
Your willingness to learn new systems, understand ESG concepts, and actively participate in team discussions.
  • You ask thoughtful questions during training sessions. You take initiative to read up on new regulations or reporting frameworks. You offer to help with tasks beyond your immediate remit once your core work is done. You seek feedback and act on it.
Quality of Documentation Support
How accurately and thoroughly you assist with maintaining records and documentation related to data sources and methodologies.
  • The supporting documents you help organise are easy for others to understand and trace. You ensure file names are consistent and versions are managed correctly. When asked to update a process guide, your contributions are clear and helpful.

7Would you like it

Both sides. What people enjoy, and what grinds them down.

What people enjoy
Learning and Development

You're excited by new concepts in sustainability and compliance. You'll actively seek out how our internal processes connect to global frameworks like GRI or ISSB. You'll ask questions about why we do things a certain way, not just how.

Spending time after a team meeting to research a new regulation mentioned, or asking your manager for a book recommendation on GHG accounting.

Contributing to a Bigger Purpose

You feel good knowing your detailed work on emissions data or social metrics helps the company be more responsible. You see the link between your spreadsheet work and the company's public commitment to sustainability.

Feeling a sense of pride when the annual sustainability report is published, knowing your accurate data was a key part of it.

Structured and Detailed Work

You enjoy tasks that require precision, following clear instructions, and organising information. You find satisfaction in completing a complex data validation exercise or tidying up a messy dataset.

Preferring to spend an afternoon meticulously cross-referencing figures in a report rather than brainstorming new strategies.

What frustrates people
  • Spending hours chasing down a single data point from a busy site manager who doesn't prioritise your request.
  • Finding errors in data that mean you have to re-do a significant chunk of work.
  • Dealing with legacy systems or manual processes that make data collection unnecessarily difficult.
  • Feeling like your work is 'behind the scenes' and not always directly visible to senior leadership.
  • The sheer volume of data entry and validation, which can sometimes feel tedious.
What this role does not give you
  • High-level strategic planning or decision-making authority.
  • Direct management of a team or significant budget responsibility.
  • Constant novelty or a completely unstructured work environment.
  • Immediate public-facing representation of the company on ESG matters.

8Who you work with

This role underpins the entire ESG reporting function. Your careful work ensures that the numbers and claims we make public are sound, which directly influences our standing with investors, regulators, and the public. Get it right, and we build trust; get it wrong, and we risk significant reputational and financial penalties. It's foundational, really.

Inside the business
  • ESG Team members (Specialists, Senior Specialists)
  • Site Operations Managers (for data collection)
  • IT Support (for system access and basic data queries)
  • Finance (for basic financial data related to ESG)
Outside the business
  • None directly, but your work supports reports seen by investors and regulators.

9What you need before you start

Not a wish list. The things you would be expected to already have.

  • A solid grasp of Excel for data manipulation and analysis.
  • An understanding of basic data quality principles—what makes data 'good' or 'bad'.
  • A genuine interest in environmental, social, and governance issues and their impact on business.
  • The ability to follow detailed instructions and work methodically.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for clear internal interactions.

10What to practise next

Where the job is going, and what to do about it starting this week.

Basic Prompt Engineering for Information Retrieval

As more information becomes accessible via large language models (LLMs), knowing how to ask the right questions to get accurate, relevant summaries of regulations or industry best practices will be a huge time-saver. It's about getting smart answers quickly.

Clear & Concise Prompting · Contextualisation · Output Validation

  • This week: Start using ChatGPT or Claude (free versions) to summarise news articles on ESG topics or explain complex regulations in simpler terms.
  • Next month: Practice asking for specific data points or trends from publicly available sustainability reports using AI, then cross-check the answers manually.
  • Month 2-3: Experiment with different phrasing in your prompts to see how it changes the AI's response, learning what works best for factual extraction.

Quick win: Use AI to draft an initial summary of a complex internal policy document before you read it in detail. It'll give you a head start.

11Staying current once you are in

What people here do to keep up
  • Attending webinars or online courses on specific ESG topics (e.g., carbon accounting, water stewardship).
  • Reading industry reports and news from reputable sources like the Financial Times, The Economist, or specialist ESG publications.
  • Joining relevant professional networks or online communities to learn from peers.
  • Seeking out internal training opportunities on our specific ESG platforms or data systems.

15Where this role leads

The long view: This role can lead to senior ESG specialist work, then ESG programme management, and on to managing an ESG team.

The ten Future Fluencies

Zavmo analysis

The credential is what you can do today. These are what keep you valuable.

A qualification proves you can do the job as it's defined today. These ten are what decide whether you're still the obvious person for it in five years. They're the capabilities employers are now writing into senior roles faster than people are learning them. Zavmo weaves them through whatever you study, so you come out with both: the credential and the fluency.

The highlighted ones are the Fluencies your role leans on hardest, from how ESG Analyst is actually changing.

How you would learn this

ESG Analyst is a start, not a ceiling. Each step below asks for new skills and hands back more autonomy.

  1. ESG Specialist (Level 002)

2-3 years in the ESG Analyst role

This is the natural next step, where you'll take on more ownership for specific data streams and start to conduct initial analyses independently.

    • Conducting initial materiality assessments (under guidance).
    • Drafting sections of public ESG reports.
    • More advanced use of ESG data management platforms (e.g., custom report building).
    • Basic stakeholder engagement for data requests (e.g., chasing site managers).
Working with AI on the job

Working with AI

Where AI is starting to help

Let's be real, a big chunk of an ESG Analyst's day can involve repetitive tasks. But what if you could get some serious help with that? We're talking about using smart tools to cut down on the grunt work, freeing you up to learn more and focus on the interesting bits. Here's how AI can make your life easier in this role.

In Compliance, Quality, Health & Safety, data accuracy is everything. AI isn't here to replace your critical thinking; it's here to be your super-efficient assistant, helping you gather, check, and summarise information faster than ever before. You'll still own the quality, but the heavy lifting? Much of it can be automated.

Automated Data Extraction

Imagine not having to manually type out numbers from a pile of utility bills or waste manifests. AI-powered tools can scan these documents, pull out the key data points (like energy consumption or waste volumes), and even categorise them for you. It's like having a tireless assistant for your data entry.

Regulatory & Peer Scan Support

Keeping up with new environmental regulations or what competitors are doing can be a full-time job. AI assistants can help you monitor news feeds, summarise new regulatory proposals from bodies like the SEC or EFRAG, and even pull out key data points from competitor sustainability reports for basic benchmarking. You'll get the gist much quicker.

Materiality Research Synthesis

When we're figuring out what ESG issues really matter to our business, there's a mountain of research to go through. AI can help you sift through industry reports, academic studies, and media articles, pulling out key themes and stakeholder concerns relevant to our sector. It won't do the thinking for you, but it'll give you a head start.

Narrative Drafting Support

Even at an entry level, you might be asked to draft small sections of internal reports. Generative AI tools can take your bullet points and turn them into coherent paragraphs. For example, 'Draft 100 words on our water usage trends for the internal report, highlighting the 5% reduction at the Manchester plant.' It's a great way to get a first draft quickly.
