3What this role really is

An Enterprise Risk Specialist spots, understands and manages the everyday risks that could disrupt a business. The work means getting into real operational challenges, figuring out what could go wrong, and helping teams put practical safeguards in place. Part of the job is turning complex regulations into something frontline teams can actually use, so operations stay compliant, safer and more reliable. It is a hands-on role with a direct, visible impact.

4What you'd actually use

The tools this job runs on, and how well you'd need to know each one.

ServiceNow GRC (or similar GRC platform like Intelex, Cority, Enablon) Intermediate

You'll be using this daily to enter incident data, update risk registers, track CAPAs, and pull pre-defined reports. You'll need to navigate it confidently and accurately.

You'll be using Excel for more than just basic spreadsheets. Expect to use VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, PivotTables, and complex formulas. You'll also use Power Query to clean and manipulate data from various sources, and potentially build simple data models in Power Pivot.

Power BI / Tableau (or similar data visualisation tool) Basic

You'll be viewing and filtering existing dashboards to extract information for your reports. You should be able to build simple charts from clean data sets to illustrate your findings.

MS Teams, SharePoint, Confluence Intermediate

These are our collaboration staples. You'll use Teams for project communication, manage documents in SharePoint lists, and contribute to existing Confluence pages for knowledge sharing. You'll need to be comfortable working in a digital-first environment.

5What you get to decide, and how that grows

Power in a job isn't your title. It's what you're allowed to decide. Here's how it grows as you move up.

The choiceComing in Where you are nowThe step above
Risk Rating Changes (Routine Operational Risks) Escalate to supervisor for review and approval. Recommend initial risk rating, adjust based on new control evidence, but final approval from Senior Manager for any significant change (e.g., from Medium to Low, or Low to Medium). Approve changes to risk ratings for operational risks within their domain, consult with Director on strategic risks.
CAPA (Corrective & Preventive Action) Extensions Escalate all extension requests to supervisor. Approve minor extensions (up to 5 business days) for non-critical CAPAs. Escalate longer or critical CAPA extensions to Senior Manager. Approve extensions for all CAPAs within their domain, only escalating if there's a significant business impact or regulatory deadline.
Incident Classification & Initial Severity Propose classification and severity, supervisor makes final decision. Classify and assign initial severity for Level 1/2 incidents based on guidelines. Escalate Level 3+ or ambiguous incidents immediately. Final authority on classification and severity for all incidents within their area, consult on enterprise-level incidents.
Methodology for Routine Risk Assessments Follow prescribed methodology and templates. Choose appropriate standard methodology (e.g., 5x5 matrix, simple Bowtie) for routine assessments. Propose minor adaptations to templates. Design and implement new risk assessment methodologies and templates for specific risk domains.

6How you'll be judged

The scoreboard, and what is not on it. The hard targets, how often each is actually looked at, and the quiet signals that never reach a dashboard.

Risk Register Data Accuracy
Ensuring the information in our risk registers is correct and up-to-date.
Target · 98% accuracy on reviewed entries

If we review 100 risk entries you've updated, only 2 should have factual errors or missing information. This means the risk owner, rating, and control descriptions are all correct.

CAPA Tracking Timeliness
How quickly you update our Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) system after an incident or audit finding.
Target · 90% of assigned CAPAs updated within 2 business days of receipt

If you're given 10 CAPAs to log and track in a week, 9 of them should be in the system, with initial details and assigned owners, within 48 hours.

Overdue Action Reduction
Helping to reduce the number of risk-related actions that are past their due date in your assigned areas.
Target · 15% reduction in overdue actions per quarter

If your assigned business unit has 20 overdue actions at the start of Q1, you should help drive that down to 17 or fewer by the end of Q1 through diligent follow-up.

Incident Investigation Support
Your contribution to timely and thorough incident investigations.
Target · Support 80% of assigned Level 1/2 incident investigations to completion within agreed timelines

If you're asked to assist on 5 investigations in a month, at least 4 should be closed out on time with all required documentation.

Quality of Risk Assessments
The thoroughness and practicality of the risk assessments you facilitate or review.
  • Feedback from operational teams on the usefulness of the assessment
  • clear identification of controls
  • Senior Manager review of assessment outputs showing a good understanding of the process and potential failure points. We'll look for evidence that you're not just going through the motions, but genuinely getting to the heart of the risks.
Stakeholder Engagement & Influence
How effectively you work with operational teams to get their buy-in on risk management activities.
  • Operational managers proactively asking for your input
  • positive feedback from colleagues during performance reviews
  • evidence of you successfully convincing a team to adopt a new control or process. It's about being seen as a helpful partner, not just 'the risk person'.
Proactive Risk Identification
Your ability to spot potential risks before they become problems, rather than just reacting to incidents.
  • Bringing new, previously unrecognised risks to the attention of your manager or the wider team
  • suggesting improvements to processes based on your observations, even if no incident has occurred yet. We want you to be looking around corners, not just at what's directly in front of you.
Clarity of Reporting
How well you summarise complex risk information for different audiences.
  • Reports are easy to understand, even for non-specialists
  • key messages are clear and concise
  • senior manager doesn't need to re-write your drafts for clarity. You'll be judged on how well you can make 'risk speak' accessible.

7Would you like it

Both sides. What people enjoy, and what grinds them down.

What people enjoy
Solving Complex Puzzles

You'll enjoy unpicking why an incident happened, piecing together information from various sources to find the root cause. It's like being a detective, but for safety and compliance.

You'll spend an afternoon sifting through maintenance records, training logs, and eyewitness accounts to figure out why a piece of equipment failed, ultimately identifying a systemic training gap.

Making a Tangible Difference to Safety

You'll get satisfaction from knowing your work directly contributes to preventing harm, whether it's by improving a safety procedure or helping a team identify a critical control.

After you help a team re-design a risky process, you see a measurable drop in near-miss reports related to that activity. That's a real win.

Continuous Learning & Improvement

You're always keen to learn about new regulations, better risk management techniques, or how our operations work. You'll look for ways to make our processes more robust.

You proactively research a new regulatory update and suggest how we can incorporate it into our existing risk assessments, rather than waiting to be told.

What frustrates people
  • Chasing overdue CAPAs: You'll spend a surprising amount of time reminding busy operational managers to complete actions they agreed to weeks ago.
  • The 'Business Prevention Unit' label: Sometimes, you'll feel like people see your job as saying 'no' and slowing things down, rather than enabling safe operations.
  • Garbage In, Garbage Out: Trying to perform a meaningful analysis based on a poorly written, one-sentence incident report from a busy supervisor.
  • Risk Assessment Fatigue: Getting genuine engagement from teams who've done dozens of risk assessments and see it as a box-ticking exercise.
What this role does not give you
  • A quiet, solitary work environment – you'll be interacting with people constantly.
  • Immediate gratification for every piece of work – change takes time, especially in risk culture.
  • Direct authority over operational teams – you'll need to influence, not command.
  • A predictable, unchanging routine – new risks and incidents pop up all the time.

8Who you work with

This role directly impacts our operational resilience and regulatory standing. Your work ensures that potential hazards are identified and controlled before they cause real harm or financial loss. Essentially, you're helping us avoid bad headlines and keep our colleagues safe, which means we can focus on delivering for our customers without unnecessary disruptions. If you do your job well, you'll help protect our licence to operate and our reputation in the market.

Inside the business
  • Operations Managers
  • Site Leads
  • Quality Team
  • Health & Safety Team
  • Engineering Teams
  • Procurement
Outside the business
  • External Auditors (indirectly through reporting)
  • Regulators (indirectly through compliance reporting)

9What you need before you start

Not a wish list. The things you would be expected to already have.

  • At least 2-3 years of hands-on experience in a compliance, quality, health & safety, or operational risk role.
  • Proven ability to conduct basic incident investigations and root cause analyses.
  • Experience maintaining risk registers or CAPA trackers, showing good attention to detail.
  • Demonstrable experience working collaboratively with operational teams to achieve results.
  • A solid grasp of Microsoft Excel beyond basic data entry; you should be comfortable with formulas and data manipulation.

10What to practise next

Where the job is going, and what to do about it starting this week.

Advanced GRC Platform Configuration

As our GRC platform matures, we'll want you to move beyond just data entry and reporting. You'll need to understand how to configure workflows, design custom reports, and manage user permissions to optimise the system for our needs.

Workflow Automation · Custom Report Building · User Access & Permissions · Integration Basics

  • This quarter: Volunteer to be a 'power user' for our GRC system, exploring its advanced features.
  • Next quarter: Take any internal or vendor-provided training on GRC platform administration or advanced reporting.
  • Month 4-6: Propose and implement a small workflow improvement or custom report within the system.

Quick win: Spend 30 minutes each week exploring the 'settings' or 'admin' sections of our GRC platform to see what's possible, even if you don't have full access yet.

Deeper Quantitative Risk Analysis

While this role isn't a pure data science job, understanding how to apply more quantitative methods to risk assessment will become increasingly valuable. This means moving beyond qualitative ratings to more data-driven insights.

Statistical Analysis for Risk · Scenario Modelling · Key Risk Indicator (KRI) Development · Data Quality Management

  • This quarter: Refresh your statistics knowledge with an online course (e.g., Khan Academy, Coursera).
  • Next quarter: Look for opportunities to apply basic statistical methods to our internal incident data.
  • Month 4-6: Propose a new KRI for a specific operational area, demonstrating how it will provide better insight.

Quick win: Start by ensuring all data you enter into the GRC system is as accurate and consistent as possible – good data is the foundation of good analysis.

The ten Future Fluencies

Zavmo analysis

The credential is what you can do today. These are what keep you valuable.

A qualification proves you can do the job as it's defined today. These ten are what decide whether you're still the obvious person for it in five years. They're the capabilities employers are now writing into senior roles faster than people are learning them. Zavmo weaves them through whatever you study, so you come out with both: the credential and the fluency.

The highlighted ones are the Fluencies your role leans on hardest, from how Enterprise Risk Specialist is actually changing.

Working with AI on the job

Working with AI

Where AI is starting to help

Let's be real, a big chunk of risk management can feel like administrative heavy lifting. But what if you could offload some of that to a smart assistant? We're embracing AI to make your job less about tedious data entry and more about genuine risk analysis and problem-solving.

Imagine spending less time sifting through incident reports or manually tracking regulatory changes. Our goal is to use AI to automate the mundane, giving you back precious hours to focus on what truly matters: understanding complex risks, building relationships, and driving real safety improvements. Here's a glimpse of how AI can supercharge your day-to-day:

Automated Incident Triage

An AI model can read incoming incident reports (even messy, unstructured ones from an email) and automatically categorise them by type (safety, environmental, quality), assign a preliminary severity, and route them to the right investigation team. This means you spend less time manually sorting and more time investigating.

Predictive Risk Hotspotting

AI can crunch through thousands of data points—from past incident reports, audit findings, and even maintenance logs—to spot patterns and predict which sites or assets might be at higher risk of a future event. This helps us move from reacting to incidents to proactively preventing them, giving you a head start.

Regulatory Change Summariser

Instead of sifting through dense legal documents, an AI agent can scan regulatory bodies (like HSE or ISO) for new legislation or guidance. It'll then give you a concise summary of the key changes and an initial idea of which company policies might need a review. Think of it as your personal regulatory research assistant.

First-Draft Report Generation

Once an investigation is wrapped up and the key data points are in our GRC system, an AI tool can generate a structured first draft of your formal incident report. This includes the background, timeline, findings, and recommended actions, leaving you to add the nuanced analysis and final polish. It dramatically cuts down on repetitive writing.
