The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Senior Compliance Auditor
3-5 years as a Senior AuditorSkills to master
- Moving from identifying non-conformances to designing the systems that prevent them. This means developing strong programme management, stakeholder influence, and strategic thinking skills. You'll need to learn how to build, not just check.
You're ready to move on when
- You've consistently identified systemic issues, not just isolated findings, during audits.
- You've taken the initiative to propose improvements to existing compliance programmes.
- You've successfully mentored junior auditors and led complex audit engagements.
- You've presented audit findings and recommendations to senior management with confidence.
- 2
From Specialist Role (e.g., EHS Manager, Quality Manager)
5-7 years in a dedicated specialist management roleSkills to master
- Broadening your expertise from a single domain (e.g., just EHS) to a more holistic view of compliance across multiple standards and regulations. This requires a strong ability to integrate different compliance requirements into a unified strategy.
You're ready to move on when
- You've successfully managed and maintained a specific management system (e.g., ISO 14001) for several years.
- You've demonstrated an ability to influence operational teams to adopt new safety or quality procedures.
- You've managed a small team and been accountable for their performance.
- You're comfortable interpreting complex regulations within your specialism and translating them into policy.
