The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Change Practitioner / Analyst
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- Mastering change impact assessments, developing effective communication plans, facilitating small workshops, and supporting project delivery. Basically, getting really good at the 'doing' of change.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering assigned change workstreams on time and to a high standard.
- Proactively identifying potential resistance points and suggesting mitigation strategies.
- Demonstrating strong analytical skills in assessing change readiness and adoption.
- Earning trust and positive feedback from project managers and stakeholders.
- 2
Project Manager (non-transformation specific)
4-6 yearsSkills to master
- Strong project planning, execution, and risk management. You'll need to layer on specific change management methodologies, stakeholder engagement for change, and understanding the 'people' side of projects.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully delivering projects within budget and scope, often involving technology or process changes.
- Showing a keen interest in the 'why' behind project failures or adoption issues.
- Taking initiative to understand the human element of change, beyond just task completion.
- Seeking opportunities to lead smaller change-focused workstreams within broader projects.
- 3
Business Analyst / Process Improvement Specialist
4-7 yearsSkills to master
- Deep dive into process mapping, requirements gathering, and identifying inefficiencies. To move into transformation, you'll need to build skills in change leadership, stakeholder influence, and the broader strategic context of change.
You're ready to move on when
- Excelling at 'As-Is' and 'To-Be' process design and identifying clear business problems.
- Frustration with solutions that aren't adopted or processes that revert to old ways.
- Proactively engaging with users to understand their challenges and resistance.
- Developing strong communication and presentation skills to articulate findings and solutions.
