The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Business Transformation Manager (L3) / Lead Transformation Program Manager (L4)
5-8 years to L3, 8-12 years to L4, then 3-4 years to L5Skills to master
- At L3, you'd master leading individual projects end-to-end, managing smaller teams, and getting good at stakeholder engagement. By L4, you'd be architecting and managing complex, cross-functional programmes, handling larger budgets, and managing dependencies across multiple projects. You'd need to show consistent success in delivering value and growing your leadership capabilities.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering programmes on time and within budget, with high user adoption.
- Strong positive feedback from executive sponsors on your strategic input and leadership.
- Demonstrable ability to manage and develop a team of 3-5 professionals, with visible growth in their capabilities.
- Proactively identifying and mitigating programme-level risks and dependencies without constant oversight.
- Successfully influencing senior stakeholders to achieve programme objectives, even in challenging situations.
- 2
Management Consultant (Senior Manager/Principal level)
Roughly 10-15 years in consulting, then 1-2 years to transition to L5Skills to master
- You'd bring a wealth of experience in diverse industries and transformation methodologies. The key here is translating that external advisory experience into internal leadership and ownership. You'd need to quickly build internal credibility, understand our specific organisational culture, and demonstrate the ability to drive change from within, not just advise on it.
You're ready to move on when
- A portfolio of successful transformation engagements with measurable client impact.
- Experience leading large consulting teams and managing complex client relationships.
- Strong capabilities in strategic problem-solving, organisational design, and change management frameworks.
- Proven ability to build trust and influence at the C-suite level.
- A clear desire to move from an advisory role to an 'owner' role, taking direct accountability for outcomes.
- 3
Head of Operations / Head of Strategy (within a large organisation)
10-15 years in operations/strategy, then 2-3 years to transition to L5Skills to master
- You'd come with deep operational knowledge or strategic planning expertise. The challenge would be broadening your perspective from a single function or pure strategy to leading cross-functional, enterprise-wide change. You'd need to master formal change management methodologies and programme governance, while still leveraging your business context.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led significant operational improvement initiatives or strategic pivots within your function.
- Demonstrated ability to manage large teams and drive performance.
- Strong understanding of the business's P&L and operational drivers.
- A track record of identifying and implementing process improvements or strategic shifts.
- A clear interest in formalising your change leadership skills and applying them across the enterprise.
