Roughly 4-6 years at L4/L5Skills to master
- Moving from managing a single programme to overseeing a portfolio of interconnected programmes. Developing strong C-suite influence, strategic decision-making with incomplete data, and deep commercial acumen for a specific business unit. Building and leading a team of senior programme leaders.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully delivered 2-3 complex, multi-year programmes with significant organisational impact.
- Consistently exceeded benefits realisation targets for your programmes.
- Actively mentored and developed junior programme managers.
- Demonstrated ability to manage programme budgets of £2M+ with tight control.

From Principal, Business Transformation (L5)
Roughly 2-4 years at L5Skills to master
- Transitioning from being the senior subject matter expert and solution architect to owning the entire transformation agenda for a business unit. This means shifting from 'how to build it' to 'what should we build and why'. Developing P&L accountability for transformation and managing a larger, more diverse team.
You're ready to move on when
- Recognised as the go-to expert for a specific transformation domain (e.g., TOM, BPR) across the enterprise.
- Successfully architected several complex transformation solutions that delivered significant value.
- Provided quality assurance and strategic guidance across multiple programmes.
- Influenced senior leaders on strategic direction, even without direct authority.

From External Management Consultant (Senior Principal/Partner equivalent)
Direct entry, assuming relevant experienceSkills to master
- Adapting to an internal, permanent role (less project-hopping, more long-term ownership). Building internal political capital and navigating internal dynamics rather than client relationships. Deepening understanding of our specific company culture and operational nuances.
