The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Cloud Engineer (Mid-Level)
2-3 yearsSkills to master
- Deepen expertise in a specific cloud provider's services, master Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for complex deployments, gain experience with containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), and take ownership of critical cloud components.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivers complex cloud infrastructure projects independently.
- Proactively identifies and resolves technical challenges without constant supervision.
- Actively mentors new team members informally and contributes to team best practices.
- Demonstrates strong understanding of cloud security and cost optimisation principles.
- 2
DevOps Engineer / SRE
3-4 yearsSkills to master
- Gain extensive experience in CI/CD pipeline automation, build robust monitoring and alerting systems, master incident response and post-mortem analysis, and champion a 'you build it, you run it' culture.
You're ready to move on when
- Has built and maintained complex CI/CD pipelines for cloud deployments.
- Proven ability to diagnose and resolve production incidents quickly and effectively.
- Strong focus on automation to reduce manual toil and improve system reliability.
- Understands the full software development lifecycle from code to production.
- 3
Infrastructure Engineer (with Cloud focus)
4-5 yearsSkills to master
- Transition from traditional data centre infrastructure to cloud-native services, develop strong scripting and automation skills, learn cloud networking and security fundamentals, and gain experience with cloud migration projects.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully migrated on-prem workloads to a public cloud environment.
- Demonstrates a clear understanding of the differences and advantages of cloud infrastructure.
- Has built automation to manage cloud resources effectively.
- Proactively seeks out cloud-specific training and certifications.
