3What this role really is

An ESG analyst checks and prepares environmental, social and governance data for company reporting.

4What you'd actually use

The tools this job runs on, and how well you'd need to know each one.

You'll be using Excel constantly to organise, clean, and perform basic analysis on raw ESG data. Knowing your way around formulas, pivot tables, and maybe even a bit of Power Query will save you hours.

ESG Data Platforms (e.g., Workiva, OneTrust, MSCI ESG Manager) Intermediate

You'll be inputting validated data into our chosen ESG platform, pulling standard reports, and navigating the system to find relevant information. We'll train you on our specific platform, but comfort with similar systems is a plus.

Microsoft PowerPoint Intermediate

You'll be helping prepare presentation slides for internal updates, mostly by copying and pasting charts and data points. Basic formatting and a clean aesthetic are helpful.

Microsoft Teams & SharePoint Intermediate

These are our primary collaboration tools. You'll be using Teams for daily communication and meetings, and SharePoint for document storage and retrieval. Knowing how to navigate and organise files is essential.

5What you get to decide, and how that grows

Power in a job isn't your title. It's what you're allowed to decide. Here's how it grows as you move up.

The choiceComing in Where you are nowThe step above
Data Collection Methodology Follow established guidelines and templates. Escalate any deviations or new data requirements to your manager. Propose minor adjustments to existing data collection methods for efficiency. Get manager approval. Design and implement new data collection methodologies for specific ESG topics, consulting with relevant internal teams and manager.
Data Validation & Error Handling Identify and flag data errors or inconsistencies. Report them to your manager for resolution. Investigate root causes of common data errors and propose solutions. Resolve routine errors independently within defined parameters. Develop and implement automated data validation rules and processes. Oversee the resolution of complex data quality issues across multiple datasets.
Reporting Content & Narrative Populate pre-defined sections of reports with validated data. Do not draft new narrative without explicit instruction and review. Draft initial narrative for specific report sections based on data and existing guidelines. Seek manager review and approval. Own the drafting of significant report sections, ensuring alignment with frameworks and strategy. Make recommendations on disclosure content to leadership.

6How you'll be judged

The scoreboard, and what is not on it. The hard targets, how often each is actually looked at, and the quiet signals that never reach a dashboard.

Data Accuracy Rate
The percentage of data points you've processed that pass internal validation checks and external audits without error.
Target · Less than 2% error rate on managed datasets.

You input 500 data points for our Scope 1 emissions, and only 5 had to be corrected after review, giving you a 99% accuracy rate. That's what we're aiming for.

Timely Data Submission
How often you meet internal deadlines for collecting, inputting, and preparing data for review.
Target · 100% of assigned data requests fulfilled by internal deadlines.

Getting all the water usage data from our 10 UK sites into the system by the 15th of the month, ready for the manager to review. Missing this means delays for everyone else.

Report Section Completion Rate
The percentage of assigned sections of our ESG reports (e.g., GRI content index, SASB tables) that you complete to a 'first-pass ready' standard.
Target · 95% first-pass accuracy on assigned report sections.

You're given the task of populating the 'Waste Management' section of our annual report. You fill in all the required data and narrative points, making it easy for your manager to do the final polish.

Adherence to Data Protocols
How well you follow our established processes for data collection, validation, and storage. It's about consistency and making sure we can trace everything back.
  • You'll consistently use the correct templates, name files according to our standards, and document any data anomalies as per our guidelines. Your manager won't have to remind you about the process, and an auditor could easily follow your trail.
Proactive Learning & Asking Questions
Your willingness to learn about ESG frameworks, our internal systems, and generally asking 'why' to understand the bigger picture, not just 'what' to do next.
  • You'll come to your manager with questions that show you've thought about the problem, rather than just hitting a wall. You'll seek out internal training or resources on ESG topics, and you'll be able to explain the purpose of the data you're collecting.
Clarity of Documentation
How well you document your work, including data sources, methodologies, and any assumptions made. This is crucial for future-you (or someone else) to pick up your work.
  • Your data logs are clear, concise, and easy for someone else to understand without needing to ask you. If you've had to make an assumption because data was missing, you'll have clearly noted it and why.

7Would you like it

Both sides. What people enjoy, and what grinds them down.

What people enjoy
Making a Real-World Impact (through data)

You'll feel good knowing that the GHG emissions data you've meticulously collected and checked is directly contributing to our company's net-zero targets and public commitments. It's not just numbers; it's about a better future.

Seeing a press release about our reduced carbon footprint and knowing your accurate data made that claim possible.

Learning & Development

You're excited by the idea of becoming an expert in ESG reporting frameworks like GRI or SASB, and you'll actively seek out opportunities to understand how different types of data contribute to our overall sustainability story.

Spending an hour researching a new EU regulation because you're genuinely interested in how it might affect our reporting next year.

Order & Accuracy

You get a genuine sense of satisfaction from a perfectly organised spreadsheet, a validated dataset, or a report section that's completely free of errors. You like bringing order to chaos.

Finding a discrepancy in a supplier's emissions data, tracing it back, and getting it corrected, knowing you've made our report more robust.

What frustrates people
  • Spending 60% of your time chasing down operational data from plant managers or HR who see your requests as a low-priority burden.
  • Dealing with inconsistent data formats or incomplete information from different internal teams.
  • The repetitive nature of data entry and validation, especially during peak reporting periods.
  • Feeling like you're just 'moving numbers around' without always seeing the direct impact of your specific task (though we promise it's there!).
What this role does not give you
  • High-level strategic decision-making – that comes later, once you've mastered the fundamentals.
  • A lot of external client interaction – most of your work will be internal.
  • Frequent travel or fieldwork – this is primarily an office-based role.
  • The ability to completely redesign processes from scratch – you'll be following established ones.

8Who you work with

Your work directly underpins the accuracy and credibility of all our public ESG disclosures. Without solid, reliable data, our sustainability claims are just words. You're essentially the gatekeeper for the numbers that show we're actually doing what we say we are.

Inside the business
  • ESG Integration Manager (your direct boss)
  • Sustainability Team colleagues
  • Operations teams (for environmental data)
  • HR (for social data)
  • Procurement (for supply chain data)
Outside the business
  • ESG data platform providers
  • External reporting consultants (occasionally)

9What you need before you start

Not a wish list. The things you would be expected to already have.

  • A solid grasp of data handling and numerical accuracy – you're comfortable with numbers and spreadsheets.
  • Proven ability to follow detailed instructions and adhere to processes, even when they're a bit tedious.
  • Strong organisational skills and a methodical approach to tasks.
  • A genuine interest in sustainability and ESG topics – you want to learn more about this field.
  • The ability to communicate clearly, both in writing and verbally, especially when asking for information.

10What to practise next

Where the job is going, and what to do about it starting this week.

Advanced Excel Automation (VBA/Macros)

Many data collection processes still rely on Excel. Learning to automate repetitive tasks with macros or more complex Power Query scripts will free up significant time and reduce human error.

Recording Macros · VBA Basics · Power Query for Data Transformation

  • This quarter: Identify one repetitive task you do in Excel every week. Can you record a macro for it?
  • Next quarter: Find an online tutorial for Power Query and try to automate one data cleaning step.
  • Within 6 months: Build a simple, automated data import and cleaning process for a recurring dataset.

Quick win: Start by recording a macro for something simple like formatting a table or sorting data. It's a small step, but it builds confidence.

Introduction to ESG Rating Agency Methodologies

As you get more comfortable with our internal data, you'll need to understand how external agencies like MSCI or Sustainalytics score us. This helps us know what data they're looking for and how to present it effectively.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) · Disclosure vs. Performance · Peer Benchmarking

  • This quarter: Ask your manager for copies of our past MSCI or Sustainalytics reports and read through them.
  • Next quarter: Research the methodologies of one key rating agency online. What are their core pillars?
  • Within 6 months: Try to identify one data point we collect that directly addresses a specific rating agency criterion.

Quick win: Simply asking your manager to walk you through our latest ESG rating report will give you a huge head start on understanding this area.

11Staying current once you are in

What people here do to keep up
  • Attend webinars or online courses on specific ESG topics (e.g., climate change basics, social impact metrics). Many are free!
  • Read industry news and reports from organisations like the World Economic Forum, CDP, or the UN Global Compact to stay informed.
  • Join relevant professional groups on LinkedIn to see what people are discussing in the sustainability space.
  • Seek out opportunities to shadow more experienced team members to understand different aspects of ESG reporting.

The ten Future Fluencies

Zavmo analysis

The credential is what you can do today. These are what keep you valuable.

A qualification proves you can do the job as it's defined today. These ten are what decide whether you're still the obvious person for it in five years. They're the capabilities employers are now writing into senior roles faster than people are learning them. Zavmo weaves them through whatever you study, so you come out with both: the credential and the fluency.

The highlighted ones are the Fluencies your role leans on hardest, from how ESG Analyst is actually changing.

Working with AI on the job

Working with AI

Where AI is starting to help

Let's be real, a lot of ESG data work can be repetitive and time-consuming. But what if you could offload some of that grunt work to AI? We're not talking about replacing you; we're talking about making your job more interesting and impactful.

Our AI Productivity Hub is designed specifically for roles like yours in Sustainability_Corporate_Social. It's a suite of tools and guides that show you how to use AI to automate the tedious bits, so you can spend more time on analysis, learning, and actually making a difference. Think of it as having a super-smart assistant for your data tasks.

Automated Data Extraction

Imagine feeding a stack of supplier invoices or utility bills into an AI tool, and it automatically pulls out the energy consumption, water usage, or waste figures. No more manual keying for hours. You'll just need to verify the output.

Smart Data Validation

Use AI to quickly scan large datasets for anomalies, outliers, or inconsistencies that a human eye might miss. It can flag potential errors, saving you hours of manual cross-referencing and helping you get to 'assurance-ready data' faster.

Basic Report Drafting

Once you have clean data, you can use generative AI to draft initial summaries or bullet points for specific sections of your sustainability report. Feed it the numbers and a prompt, and it'll give you a starting point for the narrative, saving you from staring at a blank page.

Regulatory Research Assistant

Got a question about a new part of the CSRD or ISSB standards? Ask an AI. It can quickly summarise complex regulations, highlight key requirements, or compare different frameworks, giving you a head start on your research.
