- Expanding scope from single lab to multi-site oversight, strategic budget management (CapEx), executive stakeholder influence, organisational design, and leading other managers.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managed a complex lab operation with a significant budget (£500K-£2M).
- Consistently achieved excellent audit performance with zero major findings.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and mentor a high-performing team of engineers and technicians.
- Proven track record of driving process improvements and efficiency gains within their lab.
- Successfully presented strategic initiatives to senior leadership (e.g., business cases for major CapEx).

From Senior Manager / Associate Director in Quality Assurance
4-6 years in a senior QA roleSkills to master
- Deepening technical expertise in specific R&D testing methodologies, hands-on experience with lab operations, managing technical teams (not just quality systems), and understanding the R&D product development lifecycle.
You're ready to move on when
- Extensive experience with ISO 17025 and GLP compliance, including leading external audits.
- Strong background in CAPA management and root cause analysis at an organisational level.
- Demonstrated ability to influence R&D teams on quality-related matters.
- Some exposure to lab operations and test method validation, even if not directly managing a lab.
- Proven leadership experience in a highly regulated environment.

From Head of R&D Engineering (with strong testing focus)
