The scoreboard, and what is not on it. The hard targets, how often each is actually
looked at, and the quiet signals that never reach a dashboard.
On-Time Project Milestones (Operational)
The percentage of R&D project operational milestones (e.g., equipment commissioning, critical material delivery, protocol finalisation) that are completed by their scheduled date.
Target · 90% on-time delivery for all assigned operational milestones. If a new assay requires a specific piece of equipment to be qualified by 15th March, you'll ensure all steps—from installation to validation—are complete by that date. Missing this means the project gets delayed, which we really want to avoid.
Reduction in Operational Deviations
A decrease in the number of compliance deviations or non-conformances directly related to operational errors within R&D (e.g., incorrect sample handling, expired reagents used, incomplete documentation).
Target · Reduce deviations by 15% year-on-year. You might identify that a common deviation is 'incorrect labelling of samples'. By implementing a new standardised labelling process and training, you'd aim to see that specific deviation type drop significantly.
Onboarding Efficiency for New Lab Hires
The time it takes for a new R&D lab hire to become fully productive, measured by their ability to independently follow SOPs, use key systems, and contribute to experiments.
Target · Reduce time-to-productivity for new hires by 25% (e.g., from 8 weeks to 6 weeks). You'll design and implement a better onboarding checklist and training schedule for new scientists, ensuring they know how to 'raise a deviation' or 'check the batch record' much faster than before.
Process Cycle Time Reduction
The average time taken to complete key R&D operational processes, such as equipment calibration scheduling, material requisition-to-delivery, or SOP review and approval.
Target · Achieve a 10% reduction in average cycle time for 3 critical R&D processes identified annually. If it currently takes 10 days to get a new SOP approved, you'll work on streamlining the review workflow in Veeva Vault to get that down to 9 days, saving valuable time across the department.
Process Optimisation & Innovation
Your ability to identify inefficiencies, propose improvements, and successfully implement new or refined operational processes that genuinely make a difference to the R&D team.
- You're regularly bringing forward ideas for process improvements, not just reacting to problems. We'd see evidence in project proposals for new workflows, positive feedback from scientists on implemented changes, and documentation of 'before and after' process metrics.
Mentorship & Knowledge Transfer
How effectively you guide and train junior team members and new scientists, helping them understand our operational systems, GxP requirements, and best practices.
- Junior colleagues will actively seek your advice. Managers will report that new hires are ramping up faster thanks to your guidance. You'll be asked to lead training sessions and contribute to internal knowledge articles.
Proactive Problem Solving
Your knack for spotting potential operational bottlenecks or compliance risks *before* they become major issues, and taking steps to mitigate them.
- You'll present solutions to problems we didn't even realise we had. You'll flag potential supply chain issues weeks in advance. Your manager won't be hearing about 'urgent' problems from you, but rather 'I've already dealt with this' updates.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Influence
Your effectiveness in working with other teams (like Quality, Procurement, IT) to get things done, even when priorities might not perfectly align, and your ability to influence positive outcomes.
- Other department leads will mention your helpfulness and problem-solving attitude. You'll be invited to cross-functional planning meetings. You'll successfully negotiate resources or timelines without needing your manager to intervene.
